I tend to think of social media, in this case, as things like Twitter, Facebook, etc. - which is what I think Tumblr was originally supposed to be for/geared towards. If you look at Tumblr as a blog/social-media mash-up, then it works fantastically! The problem is that a blog/social-media mash-up is sort of the last place you really want to base the majority if fandom interaction on/be the primary platform for.

But yeah, the narcissism is another element I didn't think of. On places like Facebook, it's definitely all about "you", but it does so in a way that at least invites lots of interaction, with, say, comments from multiple people converging into one place, your "place" - your stuff doesn't have to take over someone else's Timeline for them to comment (but at the same time, it CAN if they want to share their thoughts on something with everyone/as many people as possible). In other words, Facebook is flexible, which Tumblr lacks, and LJ was interactive, which Tumblr also lacks.
