I doubt there was much less in the way of drama on LJ, really.

It was just much easier to avoid it when a follower-of-a-follower-of-a-follower-of-a-follower wasn't intent on spamming your dash with it twenty times a day.

When you chose 'friends' on LJ it didn't mean every single person they were 'friends' with too, which is what happens on Tumblr.
