Err…I didn't say that.

I said I was peeved at the secret because if you're going to assume that slash shippers have issues with women it seems like a bit of a double standard to just say that het shippers are "boring" in comparison.

For the record, I think both charges of misogyny and homophobia are bullshit unless someone's making a huge deal out of how they won't ship either slash or het.

If someone exclusively ships het, they're probably uncomfortable with gays.

If someone exclusively ships slash, they're probably uncomfortable with women.

I'm not sure what that has to do with my original point, though? I just meant that I felt the secret was unfair in the sense that it said that slashers had issues with women while het writers were just boring. Because it paints one group as discriminatory but not the other when they're doing the same thing.

As for your assertion, I don't think what one ships reflects comfort necessarily. I know LOADS of dudes who exclusively watch "lesbian" porn but they're not uncomfortable with men. I imagine that that's the same for a lot of slashers.

With exclusively het ships, I don't think it's fair to say that for everyone there's discomfort with gays but rather I imagine that some of those people might need a character to self-insert into.

Porn =/= shipping, quit equating the two.

Shipping isn't what you get off to.

(Anonymous) 2014-10-28 06:09 pm (UTC)(link)
No but there's a really, really strong correlation between what people ship and what they get off to

(Anonymous) 2014-10-28 08:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Uh, no.

(Anonymous) 2014-10-28 06:32 pm (UTC)(link)
A lot of people only ship things that they can get off to.

Considering the fact that most dudes that watch exclusively girl-on-girl porn are homophobic as all get out to lesbians ("can I watch?" "sleep with my girlfriend" "sleep with me and my girlfriend" "I bet a nice dick could turn you" "I bet *I* could change your mind" "you're too pretty to be gay"), I'm not sure that you want to be compared to them at all. lol. They're not uncomfortable with other men but they are uncomfortable with gay men. Oftentimes this is the same case with purely male slash shippers–– they're not uncomfortable with women. They're uncomfortable with lesbian/bisexual/queer women.

also, with the self insert thing, if you can't relate to lgbt people enough to self insert, then that's a little suspicious in terms of what you think about lgbt people. I mean, all of this seems a little silly–– like I don't really care what people ship or don't ship, but it feels a little like a moral imperative to make sure they're thinking critically about these issues so that I'm not being a passive bystander to homophobia issues here lol. Like they could have a younger niece or nephew that turns out to be lgbt off the internet.

Nope. It is possible to have interesting female characters who are *gasp* not in the central relationship as part of your slash fic
