Yeah, she's pretty cardboard. She delivers dialogue, but seems to put even less emotion into it than the generic Vulcan characters do.

Given how good Nichelle Nichols line reading of 'Hailing frequencies open, Captain' were Zoe Saldana had a pretty high bar set. And I mean that. How someone could do so much with so little ...

NN was a great physical actress, she did a lot with body movements and facial expressions so that even when she had no lines she still had screen presence. Admittedly it was easier as the original bridge set was smaller and her station was the third point of a triangle between Kirk's and Spock's shoulders, so she was on camera a lot. Not to mention the old set wasn't an overlit iStore, so she wasn't lost in all the background clutter. You'd think being in a red costume against a white background that ZS would stand out more, but in reality just the opposite has happened. It is such a cluttered design she and the extras just vanish into a blur. However, ZS is a very stiff actor and doesn't do a lot of body movement and has only one facial expression (although that is a common thing across a lot of current actors, male and female both, where noone seems to move their cheek muscles). She's more a living prop than an integral part of the team, just there because NN was part of the original cast, just hitting the tick box (although the same could be said for Chekov who made less of an impact than Ensign Olsen despite surviving the movie).

Those are all good observations, anon. I knew I didn't like the Bridge design but I didn't think about how all the visual noise (not to mention the large size and the constantly moving camera) detracted from character interaction and reaction shots.

The touchscreen format of the modern era bridge certainly is no gift to any actor. NN had the benefit of physical controls to manipulate, and that gave her opportunity to add movement and put nuance into how she manipulated the instruments. ZS can only sit up straight and prod.
