Why is this a secret? This is a super popular opinion. Personally, I love Zoe Saldana in all things and loved the character, though I did wish she'd been given more to do than mostly romance (even though I do ship).

(Anonymous) 2014-10-30 11:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, she's pretty cardboard. She delivers dialogue, but seems to put even less emotion into it than the generic Vulcan characters do.

(Anonymous) 2014-10-30 11:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Given how good Nichelle Nichols line reading of 'Hailing frequencies open, Captain' were Zoe Saldana had a pretty high bar set. And I mean that. How someone could do so much with so little ...

I already have trouble thinking of a Zoe Soldana role I actually like, but her Uhura was probably the most watchable one for me. Not exactly a great one, especially since she doesn't have much to really do :(

(Anonymous) 2014-10-30 11:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, throwing in another opinion here, my dad didn't like her because he felt they chose a skinnier actress (for size) and one who wasn't as good as the original Uhura. I really didn't think she was that much thinner, but I respect his feelings on the matter. (I definitely don't like it when actresses are picked for their size/shape rather than acting ability, when it happens.) :)

(Anonymous) 2014-10-31 12:47 am (UTC)(link)
I feel kind of petty for posting this but Zoe's skinniness also bothers me. I get that it's a huge pressure in Hollywood but she's still REALLY thin. And maybe she's healthy at that size (she's a former dancer and it's none of my business anyway), but I was really disappointed in her for publishing her weight on the cover of Allure. Especially since she's underweight for her height.

My problem is she just wasn't very Uhura-ish. TOS!Uhura was very big-hearted and warm and sassy in a quiet, sly way and had pretty demonstrative emotions, and I would have liked to see that expanded on and made more prominent than it was in TOS. She's too stock-Strong Love Interest in the reboot, and the Spock/Uhura romance was boring -- which was particularly disappointing because it didn't need to be boring! Look at them flirt: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KMkpk1yahnc

THIS.TOS Uhura was so warm and sassy, and came across as the quiet observer type. Reboot Uhura had none of that personality.

Yeah, this. There's not much of the feel of the original Uhura coming through. Though honestly I don't know when to blame Saldana and when to blame the writers.

I agree about original Uhura. But I felt the same way about McCoy so I think I blame the writers more than the actress. The film McCoy comes off as so humourless and kind of a killjoy that I assumed it was just the way the character was supposed to be, but when I watched the series I was surprised to find how funny and flirty I found the original. A lot of that could have been the actor, but I wish they'd kept some of the fun and sense of humour of the character.

Wasn't the original Uhura sort of boring, too, in modern day perspective? As a Character, that is - Nichelle Nichols does seem to have a bit more spirit than Saldana, but honestly that might be the age.

What was groundbreaking about Uhura was that she was a black woman being a competent member of a Starship crew - the problem is, if you try to transpose that to a modern day setting, you need to do a bit more with the character.

(Anonymous) 2014-10-31 12:03 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, she didn't have a lot to do - Nichols almost quit the show because she didn't have enough to do, but Martin Luther King actually convinced her to stay on for representation's sake. However, she definitely had a lot more personality per line and per minute of screentime.

(Anonymous) 2014-10-31 12:04 am (UTC)(link)
It's not just Uhura's limited role. Uhura might not always have had much to do in TOS, but Nichelle Nichols brought so much charisma and magic to the character. People aren't just her fans because she was a black woman. It was that and the fact that she was amazing.

original Uhura was in the background and the token poc, just like Sulu.
The more I read people complaining about new Uhura, the more I get the feeling new Uhura is hated so much because she's not the token black woman and background character that Nichelle Nichols played.

Those replying that Nichelle just made the poor character development and obviously limited writing better 'because of reasons' seem disingenuous to me.
Zoe Saldana gets way more to do and resembles the main female character that tos never had. While Nichols was a good actress, neither of them are oscar worthy (not that the other actors were) but Zoe Saldana's often praised by critics and directors alike for being emotionally available to co stars and a good actress. She's the cast member that is part of a minority in hollywood and yet, she's the only one among them that has, almost, a A list status.
Not trying to say she's the best, just not the terrible actress that the K/S sockpuppets anons here try to make her out to be. She isn't half bad and generally speaking, her Uhura is considered by unbiased critics an improvement compared to the old one.

(Anonymous) 2014-10-30 11:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Well…you're not alone on that. I remember ConfusedMatthew calling her "generic as fuck."

I found her to be rather unlikable, especially in the second movie; I didn't have strong feelings for her one way or another in the first one, but I didn't really dig anything about her. I thought the second movie was just bad overall, but anything I might have liked about her - her intelligence, the fact that she was competent and good at her job - completely disintegrated when she and Spock were having that fight while the ship they were on crashed or whatever. Were they trying to be funny?

I'm not sure if it's the actor or not, though. I'm also not sure why disliking her means you're woman-hating trash if you come out of a movie disliking every single female character, even if there's only one that has any notable impact on the plot.

(Anonymous) 2014-10-31 12:04 am (UTC)(link)
Gonna be honest here…I didn't like her because she made a terrible first impression on me. I hated that she talked to Kirk like he was a moron who would have no idea what xenolinguistics was. It was condescending and elitist. And what's worse is she later goes on to call him a "dumb hick who only has sex with farm animals."

It made her seem…well…kind of prejudiced to be honest. At the very least, she didn't seem to mind throwing out stereotypes as insults.

I think it really got to me because it came right on the heels of the really serious discrimination Spock was facing for being half-human. And putting Uhura's scene back to back with that just wasn't a good idea. Especially since it's her introduction.

It also really hurt the believability of the romance for me since I really couldn't see Spock going for someone with that kind of mindset given what he'd experienced.

(Anonymous) 2014-10-31 12:06 am (UTC)(link)
She only got on the Enterprise because she was sleeping with Spock too.

The first reason is actually why I disliked her. It seems like writers have a habit of taking it too far and they shoot way past "character with some attitude" into "asshole with dickish dialogue" area.

I think I'm incapable of looking at Saldana and thinking "boring" but it's not as if that gives me the higher ground.

(Anonymous) 2014-10-31 12:40 am (UTC)(link)
I didn't dislike her as much as I hated Quinto's Spock, but yes she was incredibly boring.

I guess I'll be in the minority of of liking her then. I do agree with the points that she didn't have much to do and could really have done with some better character development, but I still like her.

Doesn't help that the writers apparently decided Uhura should be a whiny teenage brat, personality-wise. I mean, I didn't expect the original Uhura, because Nichelle Nichols is so amazing and not exactly the type of person you run across every day, but I was interested in seeing a different interpretation of the character. I was also happy about seeing Uhura/Spock become canon, at long last. But, condescending? Whining to her boyfriend because she didn't get the assignment she wanted? Yanking the earpiece out of her ear, throwing it down, then crossing her arms and sulking? What the fuck version of Uhura were the writers watching?

(Anonymous) 2015-01-02 12:11 am (UTC)(link)
Zoe Saldana sucks in everything.
