(Anonymous) 2014-10-31 12:04 am (UTC)(link)It made her seem…well…kind of prejudiced to be honest. At the very least, she didn't seem to mind throwing out stereotypes as insults.
I think it really got to me because it came right on the heels of the really serious discrimination Spock was facing for being half-human. And putting Uhura's scene back to back with that just wasn't a good idea. Especially since it's her introduction.
It also really hurt the believability of the romance for me since I really couldn't see Spock going for someone with that kind of mindset given what he'd experienced.

(Anonymous) 2014-10-31 12:11 am (UTC)(link)What I don't get is why she stayed his girlfriend after he pulled something like that. A guy who is willing to throw your career under the bus to cover his ass doesn't love you. I don't know why she would put up with something like that and it made it hard for me to empathize with her given how much importance I put on my job and career prospects.
I certainly wouldn't stay with someone who disrespected me the way Spock did.

(Anonymous) 2014-10-31 12:28 am (UTC)(link)Either way, it's their first scene together and it's hugely dysfunctional.
I think another problem with the scene is that the first time you view it, you don't know that Uhura is Spock's girlfriend. And so it seems as though it's just a cadet talking to her commanding officer/former professor like that. And given Uhura's tone of voice, it comes off as exceedingly disrespectful. I think it would have worked better if we had known beforehand that she was his girlfriend.
Anyway, it's just a very, very poor scene and it's one of the reasons I hate how the Spock/Uhura pairing was done. There's no respect or communication going on between them.

(Anonymous) 2014-10-31 12:21 pm (UTC)(link)The original argument is that she only got placed on the Enterprise because she was sleeping with Spock. In actuality, she would have originally been placed on the Enterprise if she hadn't been sleeping with Spock -- this is said, outright, and you seem to acknowledge it.
The inappropriateness of their argument (and their relationship) is one thing; her placement on the Enterprise is another. Take away their relationship, and she would have been there. That means that their relationship wasn't the primary reason for her being there.

I don't have a strong opinion on her character either way though (and agree with everyone up-thread talking about how fantastic NN was, and how this Uhura is quite different), but I do think Zoe probably did as much that she could with what she was given.

(Anonymous) 2014-10-31 12:33 am (UTC)(link)I agree. It definitely wasn't just Uhura. Kirk got on my nerves constantly. Spock had the worst moment when he brought up Kirk's dead father just to score a cheap hit (WTF was that -- low blow). I think what bothers me with Uhura, especially, though is that the others -- both Kirk and Spock -- get castigated and get better as a result. She doesn't.
Kirk gets beaten up, gets chewed out by superior officers, has to suffer and experience fear. And he grows up and is far more likable by the end of Star Trek Into Darkness as a result. Same with Spock -- losing his mother and his planet seems to have softened him somewhat.
With Uhura, that never happens. She's always right. No one dislikes her. And she never gets a moment for character growth as a result. Even when she's doing something blatantly wrong -- like having a fight with her boyfriend on a mission -- the film goes out of its way to set her up as in the right. (Kirk says "leave me out of it" but then concedes "she is right"). And some of her behavior in the second film STILL bothers me -- like when she's giving Spock the silent treatment even though there's suggestions that he could be suicidal/have a martyr complex/has PTSD. And…that's just not the way to handle it. I also hate that she makes it about her -- "you didn't think what it would do TO ME."
I don't know. I'm not a huge fan of Zoe either way, but I really don't like the way Uhura's been written.

If you don't like Uhura and Spock's relationship then I can understand your dislike because she isn't given much else to do. (I don't like them together either, but at this point I'm just resigned to action flicks 'needing' romances.)

(Anonymous) 2014-11-08 01:27 pm (UTC)(link)It's all the more ironical because you're calling Uhura a racist just to defend Kirk of all the people. Kirk who, saved for MCcoy, is racist about Spock's alieness all the time.
