She only got on the Enterprise because she was sleeping with Spock too.

AYRT…I don't think that was the case. Given that she was more competent than the dude manning the station, I believe her when she says that she earned a place and that Spock put her on the Farragut to avoid the appearance of favoritism.

What I don't get is why she stayed his girlfriend after he pulled something like that. A guy who is willing to throw your career under the bus to cover his ass doesn't love you. I don't know why she would put up with something like that and it made it hard for me to empathize with her given how much importance I put on my job and career prospects.

I certainly wouldn't stay with someone who disrespected me the way Spock did.

There is more to placement than grades. And since Spock was fucking her, and Spock was down as Enterprise's XO she should not have been expecting a placement under his command specifically to avoid that conflict of interest. Then, in the middle of the biggest crisis in the Federation's history since Jonathon Archer was made a Captain, she decided to pick a fight over placements when everyone was trying to ship out. She used her relationship with Spock to get him to change the placement because she felt her ego was hurt. Again, in the middle of a crisis. Whether you think Spock was unprofessional or not by making sure that his g/f wasn't going to be a conflict of interest is by-the-by, Uhura showed she was unprofessional by picking to have her little Ego-spat during an emergency.

I agree with you to a point. I think both of their behavior was pretty awful. In Spock's case, I don't know why he didn't just ask someone else to assign her in his stead if he was worried about favoritism. For Uhura, I agree that the middle of a crisis was not the time and place to confront Spock about it.

Either way, it's their first scene together and it's hugely dysfunctional.

I think another problem with the scene is that the first time you view it, you don't know that Uhura is Spock's girlfriend. And so it seems as though it's just a cadet talking to her commanding officer/former professor like that. And given Uhura's tone of voice, it comes off as exceedingly disrespectful. I think it would have worked better if we had known beforehand that she was his girlfriend.

Anyway, it's just a very, very poor scene and it's one of the reasons I hate how the Spock/Uhura pairing was done. There's no respect or communication going on between them.

Fucking thank you this. She didn't get on the Enterprise BECAUSE she was sleeping with Spock. She was initially put on the Farragut BECAUSE she was sleeping with Spock, because SPOCK somehow thought having his lover onboard was going to complicate things for HIM; not thinking about how it would affect her career. Yes, she convinced him to put her on the Enterprise, but that was because she knew she had the scores to be there and not on the Farragut (I would imagine if there wasn't the crisis on Vulcan, she might have taken it to Captain Pike if Spock had refused to change things)

When two officers are in a relationship it is 100% appropriate that the junior officer, regardless of gender, should be posted out of the chain of command of the senior one. In this case since Spock is XO of Enterprise Uhura should not have been on that boat, due to issues that the sequel amply demonstrates, and her posting to the Farragut was completely appropriate. She was out of line protesting, both on grounds for her protest and time of her protest. Spock might have been a dick about the way he handled her posting, she should have been called into a meeting and had that quietly explained to her well in advance-although with a full on crisis this might not have been possible, but it was the correct call. Grades are only one part of your career, one very small part. Grades alone do not get you the plum posting, especially when you are in a relationship with someone in the chain of command of that posting.

You're still putting the cart before the horse with this argument, though.

The original argument is that she only got placed on the Enterprise because she was sleeping with Spock. In actuality, she would have originally been placed on the Enterprise if she hadn't been sleeping with Spock -- this is said, outright, and you seem to acknowledge it.

The inappropriateness of their argument (and their relationship) is one thing; her placement on the Enterprise is another. Take away their relationship, and she would have been there. That means that their relationship wasn't the primary reason for her being there.

Yep. Spock initially denied her the posting she deserved because they were in a relationship, not the other way around.
