There is more to placement than grades. And since Spock was fucking her, and Spock was down as Enterprise's XO she should not have been expecting a placement under his command specifically to avoid that conflict of interest. Then, in the middle of the biggest crisis in the Federation's history since Jonathon Archer was made a Captain, she decided to pick a fight over placements when everyone was trying to ship out. She used her relationship with Spock to get him to change the placement because she felt her ego was hurt. Again, in the middle of a crisis. Whether you think Spock was unprofessional or not by making sure that his g/f wasn't going to be a conflict of interest is by-the-by, Uhura showed she was unprofessional by picking to have her little Ego-spat during an emergency.

I agree with you to a point. I think both of their behavior was pretty awful. In Spock's case, I don't know why he didn't just ask someone else to assign her in his stead if he was worried about favoritism. For Uhura, I agree that the middle of a crisis was not the time and place to confront Spock about it.

Either way, it's their first scene together and it's hugely dysfunctional.

I think another problem with the scene is that the first time you view it, you don't know that Uhura is Spock's girlfriend. And so it seems as though it's just a cadet talking to her commanding officer/former professor like that. And given Uhura's tone of voice, it comes off as exceedingly disrespectful. I think it would have worked better if we had known beforehand that she was his girlfriend.

Anyway, it's just a very, very poor scene and it's one of the reasons I hate how the Spock/Uhura pairing was done. There's no respect or communication going on between them.
