I think another problem with the scene is that the first time you view it, you don't know that Uhura is Spock's girlfriend. And so it seems as though it's just a cadet talking to her commanding officer/former professor like that. And given Uhura's tone of voice, it comes off as exceedingly disrespectful. I think it would have worked better if we had known beforehand that she was his girlfriend.
Anyway, it's just a very, very poor scene and it's one of the reasons I hate how the Spock/Uhura pairing was done. There's no respect or communication going on between them.
