I didn't like that scene either, but at the same time I feel like most the main characters in the reboot had asshole moments, so...I guess I let it slide and didn't take it too seriously. (Like the movies in general, really. I like them but they're popcorn flicks.)

I don't have a strong opinion on her character either way though (and agree with everyone up-thread talking about how fantastic NN was, and how this Uhura is quite different), but I do think Zoe probably did as much that she could with what she was given.

AYRT

I agree. It definitely wasn't just Uhura. Kirk got on my nerves constantly. Spock had the worst moment when he brought up Kirk's dead father just to score a cheap hit (WTF was that -- low blow). I think what bothers me with Uhura, especially, though is that the others -- both Kirk and Spock -- get castigated and get better as a result. She doesn't.

Kirk gets beaten up, gets chewed out by superior officers, has to suffer and experience fear. And he grows up and is far more likable by the end of Star Trek Into Darkness as a result. Same with Spock -- losing his mother and his planet seems to have softened him somewhat.

With Uhura, that never happens. She's always right. No one dislikes her. And she never gets a moment for character growth as a result. Even when she's doing something blatantly wrong -- like having a fight with her boyfriend on a mission -- the film goes out of its way to set her up as in the right. (Kirk says "leave me out of it" but then concedes "she is right"). And some of her behavior in the second film STILL bothers me -- like when she's giving Spock the silent treatment even though there's suggestions that he could be suicidal/have a martyr complex/has PTSD. And…that's just not the way to handle it. I also hate that she makes it about her -- "you didn't think what it would do TO ME."

I don't know. I'm not a huge fan of Zoe either way, but I really don't like the way Uhura's been written.

The choosing the middle of a mission to have a fight with her boyfriend, who is also her superior, shows that she should never have been posted to the same ship as him. If only someone had had the foresight to post her elsewhere. Oh, wait.

Yeaaa, the fighting on the ship didn't make her (or anyone) look good, tbh. I know it was played for laughs, but even the fact that Kirk eventually agreed with her annoyed me. Again, all I can say to that is that these films aren't exactly masterpieces, and the writing isn't always on point. (I agree with you in that I do think both Spock and Kirk changed throughout the movies, but Uhura didn't seem to. She didn't really have her own arc. Maybe next film? ...Though I wouldn't count on it.)

If you don't like Uhura and Spock's relationship then I can understand your dislike because she isn't given much else to do. (I don't like them together either, but at this point I'm just resigned to action flicks 'needing' romances.)
