Okay, so I'm not really into the Marvel universe fandom, but I sell a lot of doujinshi, and like 90% of the Bucky and Steve stuff is Bucky/Steve both before and after the time skip.

I don't get it, I kind of figured Captain America would be on top. He's Captain America, man. What am I missing here? Usually I have a pretty good radar for these things (that like 99% of the Thor doujinshi I sell are Thor/Loki and not Loki/Thor is the opposite of surprising, for example). But this surprises me.

I'm not involved in the fandom at all, but this totally surprises me too. That is not what I expected from the pairing at all.

Maybe it's a holdover from the first film?

Wait, I'm not familiar with the order thing, but I guess you mean you're surprised that there's a lot of stuff with Bucky topping?

I honestly think fics and art with Steve topping are till somewhat more numerous, but you can quite easily find both in the fandom.

I'm not sure what the reasons are. I've heard two theories that sort of make sense. One that it's comic fans who know the Bucky!Cap thing and consider them to be equally matched. Two that it's basically because Bucky had no agency over his body in Winter Soldier,so people are more often writing him as taking control in the bedroom post-brainwashing.

Well, doujinshi are Japanese, and Japanese fandom tastes do not always run along the lines of Western fans' tastes (sometime they're like the dead opposite, lol) but I'm surprised by how much of it is Extreme Uke Steve, I guess. I don't get that read on Captain America's character at all.

Especially given, well, the fandom's propensity for woobifying the equally long-haired and equally tragic pseudo-badguy Loki into Ultimate Weepy Uke territory, the amount of Bucky/Steve surprises me.

Well, maybe they're basing Extreme Uke Steve on pre-serum Steve - that would make sense. Also for Bucky, as he wasn't long-haired and tragic then yet.

I would totally imagine that Bucky would be the bishie dark haired woobie bottom in in doujin, negl.

Hold over from tiny!Steve, most likely, so the height thing. Also, Steve is probably perceived as nicer in general, 100% pro-Bucky, and if that fails, blonde. More "feminine" characteristics put people on the bottom in fandom minds, although to be completely fair, neither Steve or Bucky really fit the uke bill. I expect a lot of bad characterization is occurring.

Innocent virgin!Steve is the only reason I can think for that Extreme Uke syndrome.

I have no idea, but I like the thought of them switching. (I DID expect fandom to have Steve top more because most people seem to be into 'the larger person tops' thing, but...*shrugs* Maybe the whole little!Steve thing influenced some folks preferences?)

As for the rarity of bottom!Thor, I weep. I weep bitter tears.

Yeah I was pretty much expecting him to be Loki Redux and that didn't happen at all. I am not sure why. You might be right with little!Steve? Idk.

I haven't went looking for Cap doujinshi, but I would've expected the same. Not because I think Bucky is anything like Loki, but because doujinshi can sometimes be pretty...lenient on characterization. (And he does have that long haired, tragic past thing going on.)

I love when they switch. I can't stand pairings where one is always designated the top. It can be so fucking annoying.

I also love when they switch, though for this pairing especially. i have pairings where my preferences are more pronounced.

I can understand why you feel that way because usually when I see that happen, I eventually grow tired of it and want the opposite. It's happened so many times.

Sometimes I do have a preference and maybe that delays or stops that sort of reaction, but IA, it can get annoying.

Same, and I really like that in this fandom it's closer to 50/50 with either of them topping, I do think there is still slightly more top!Steve fics but top!Bucky is written/drawn often enough that I'm not annoyed by one dominating fandom.

I prefer Cap domming myself (don't care who is top or bottom). He is just a leader to me, and he is one of the characters I see being in charge both in real life and in the bedroom, though he's a gentle sort of dom. Which is weird for me because Steve is the one I'm more attracted to and I usually tend to prefer the character I'm attracted to being the more submissive partner. But I just can't read Steve as submissive.

But I think it is a holdover from the first movie where Steve is small and people can't imagine a small person domming or topping. Personally, I love the hell out of fics where Steve is in charge both before and after and Bucky follows Steve regardless.

Also, though I don't ship, Loki/Thor makes far more sense to me. Thor is a follower in a lot of ways, and Loki seems to really like being in charge. And also, submissive!Thor is hot. But anyway.

I enjoy both. Top or bottom, subbing or domming. But I prefer dom Bucky. D:

I usually don't have a preference. There are very few where I do. But I do here. I will totally read top!Bucky vanilla fics, but if someone is in charge it has to be Steve for me. I'm not entirely sure why because it isn't where I'd normally lean.

I think…and this is just my little theory here…that this is the result of Bucky basically growing up taking care of Steve and fighting his battles. He's Steve's protector and caretaker in a sense and I think people translate that to him topping -- to him being in control, "giving" Steve pleasure, being in charge.

Also, I think this extends to post-serum and post-Winter Soldier interactions because this is a role Bucky is familiar with and thus could be more like himself. Given how much Bucky is probably going to be relying on Steve emotionally and psychologically after the events of TWS, I think top!Bucky is written as a way for Bucky to be on the "giving" end and recapture some part of his past.

Anyway, just rambling.

Yeah, there was actually one artist that wrote in the intro notes that if Steve topped Bucky while he lost his memory it would be "like rape". But not so the other way around.

Yeah. I don't agree with that logic either. But I think the whole Bucky topping thing has a lot to do with how Bucky's always been looking out for and taking care of Steve.

I imagine following the Winter Soldier, though, that those roles will be reversed, with Steve taking care of Bucky. And I think writing top!Bucky might be a way to recapture some of their former dynamic.

For myself, I prefer Steve bottoming just because he seems a tad clueless and hesitant when it comes to sex and I tend to imagine him on the receiving end as a result. Bucky coming up to him with a borderline lascivious smirk and having his way with him...

Something people haven't mentioned yet--and I may be giving the fandom too much credit here--but Bucky was brainwashed. Sex is way less skeevy if the person who would probably have issues with their identity/role in life is the one in control, and that generally means topping.

Or maybe it's hair color, I don't know.

Lol I just replied to the anon above you that one of the doujin artists wrote pretty much exactly that in the notes. But fandom rarely seems so bothered about issues of consent?

Maybe because it's Steve?

Steve and skeevy don't really mix well. At all. At least without going REALLY OOC.
