Food and cold weather

[personal profile] kallanda_lee 2014-10-31 12:42 am (UTC)(link)
Does anyone else have this thing where you just want warm food all the time when it's cold?

I seriously could eat 3 warm meals a day now (I'm not going to, because I don't want to gain the weight I lost, but it sounds great).

Am I weird or is this common?

Pretty much all mammals in cold climates store up fat for the winter through increased appetite, yeah.

Damnnit, I don't want to store up fat!

Apparently not my parents, they think I'm weird in that regard.

I think they're the weird ones, haha. They don't crave warm food when the weather gets cold?

Well not 3 times a day in any case :)

I find I make a lot of hearty, spicy food in colder months. Tacos, and chili, adding pepper to stir-fries.

I'm hungrier in warmer weather, though. Being cold makes me sleepy, not hungry. I might be a bear.

I certainly eat more quantity-wise in winter. I eat less (and also move more) when it's warm.

The idea of hibernating sounds good about now, though.

I'll eat soup all year long, but I especially want to eat soup when it is cold. Lots and lots of soup with nice warm bread.

Now I want soup...too late now, but I have a can of it, could have some tomorrow.

Soup, or nice, thick stew.

Oh, yes. I have a really nice beef stew crock pot recipe. Next week I'm going to make my meaty lentil soup (I call it my meaty soup because it has ham, bacon, and beef bullion in it and is not at all for the vegetarian).

How is this weird? Nothing is less appealing than a cold, wet salad when daytime highs drop into the 20s (fahrenheit). This is when I want oatmeal for breakfast, and soup or stew with delicious hot crusty bread for supper, and something hot in between too.

Also, hot =/= calorie-laden...or are you talking about not eating 3 meals a day?

For me, generally, hot meals tend to have more calories. If I just have some yoghurt and fruit, that's generally less.

That is called being normal. Your body is trying to maintain its temperature and is asking you to deliver warm food directly into your body's core in order to facilitate that. It is also asking for calories to maintain its own efforts in that regard. That so much of our hot food is ridiculously starch and fats heavy, beyond the requirements for extra calories really, is neither here nor there. Its all about thermo-regulation.

Hot foods are a staple of my winter diet, especially things like chicken and dumplings, or pork and noodles made from scratch.

No I'm with you on this. In warmer weather I'll eat non hot food but as soon as winter hits I need soup for lunch or something else warm everyday.

One of my favourite meals is chicken and potatoes, except during the summer, when it's chicken and fries.

We eat a lot of stews/soups in the winter, so no not weird. And I like a lot of broth soups so it's not a lot of calories.

Yes, all the time during the winter. My solution is hot drinks like coffee and tea.

I want warm food most of the time when it's hot as well, but yeah, especially in winter, you just want a nice comfy bowl of something. Some curry with rice, or some kind of soup, or what have you. It's nice and warming and there's nothing wrong with that. It's comfy. Comfy is good.

Re: Food and cold weather

Yes, very much so. I'm assuming it has something to do with metabolism, like maybe we burn through more fuel in colder temperatures because our body has to work harder to maintain its internal body heat I'm not sure.

Though I do gain some weight during the winter when I am in cold places.
