I care! Maybe because I did the same thing, got into the show during the hiatus, though I'm Britsh. And old enough to have vague memories of watching Seven's serials as a three/four year old.

Agree though OP. It was so weird seeing the show take off again post 2005. A few years before I never thought I'd see the day.

That kind of thing always weirds me out. It just feels offputting and wrong to me, you know? This is because I am a crazy person and your attitude is almost certainly healthier but still.

I use them as a way to figure out who to avoid in a bookstore.

yay! Excitement high-wife! There's something amazing about being able to just walk in and browse fandom merchandise!

I know right? I became a fan in the 80s when they were showing the old!who on PBS. There were two whovans at my school, me and a very smart but geeky guy. I love how mainstream Who is but it still kinda shocks me.

PBS FOR LYFE!!!

I started watching who (Dr. 9) through one of their sister stations one night. And then that's where it took off :]

Oh, yes. My dad was a fan of this show since before I was born. He watched it on public TV late at night. It never really 'stuck' for me, but I loved the reboot from day one (and had enjoyed some of the older Dr. Who stuff before that, from time to time). To have it become a mainstream thing...which it didn't for several seasons, IIRC, and now to have all this Dr Who stuff in the local bookstores and such...it's like, "MY PEOPLE!!!!!!!11one!!!" :D I'm enthused. I'm happy. I own a TARDIS hat. :D And I'm not even into hte fandom. Just liek the show.

a TARDIS hat? Cool! I have a Hobbit Bofur hat and can't wear it anywhere. -/

m-mm, warm!

I've noticed the change in Doctor Who's mainstreamness just since I started watching in 2006 or whatever (as an American). There didn't used to be DW merchandise in Hot Topic! I can't imagine how it would be for someone who was a fan for longer!

Oh, I get ya. I got into Doctor Who when it was a weird foreign thing in my part of the world. I was into the books and comics, and didn't start regularly watching the show until Eccleston. But when I was a kid reading Dcotor Who comics, I heard about the delayed 23rd season and Colin Baker's troubles with the producers.

It's good to see the show do well.

I got into Who during the haitus between Eccleston and Tennant, it was the first really popular thing that I really cared about, and I still get all giddy when I see that much shelf space devoted to it. I don't think I'll ever get used to being a fan of something that isn't Star Trek and isn't at least a little obscure.

The hiatus between Eccleston and Tennant? Oh, sweetie...

Wait, you're using hiatus properly....these dorks are referring to the period of several years when Doctor Who was not on the air and the franchise wandered into audio plays and original novels.

The Hiatus was something like 16 years long! 1989-2005.
