Re: Wasted Potential
(Anonymous) 2014-11-01 09:44 pm (UTC)(link)Also, I find that for TV there are several story ideas that come up again and again but because it's TV, they're always wasted. For instance, NCIS NO just had a plague storyline that was wrapped up in one episode and none of the main characters got sick. Or if there's an earthquake or other big natural disaster -- they're always wrapped up in one episode and the story is usually formulaic and doesn't take in account the interesting premise. Another example, CSI Miami had a hurricane but the episode was about a murder during the hurricane and not about the aftermath of the hurricane itself. Or they had a tsunami and there was a heist during it - they didn't show the heist or the tsunami. It's budgetary I'm sure but it's still wasted potential.
Re: Wasted Potential
by the way, I think you need faithfulness instead of fidelity. I imagined Tolkien/OC for a sec.)

(Anonymous) 2014-11-02 12:13 am (UTC)(link)Totally agree about the Hobbit, though. I think the main issue was the studio insisting they break it up into three movies to squeeze out all $$ they could, forcing Jackson & Co to pad a short story with extraneous subplots like Tauriel/Kili/Legolas and several too-long CG chase sequences. Hopefully there will be a tighter Director's Cut when it comes to DVD.
