Wasted Potential

(Anonymous) 2014-11-01 08:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Inspired by secret #7.

What's something that had a really good premise and yet it was the potentual was wasted or not explored properly? It could be a fanfic plot, the entire show/game/comic etc entire premise or just a episode or two. Hell, it could even be a character.

Ever After High, but to be fair, they are slowly clawing their way back into 'will they or won't they'. That Thronecoming special was a doozy.

Sherlock and Elementary. Sherlock is simply nothing but wasted potential. So is a large chunk of Elementary. There are so many things about a modern SH AU that could be amazing - how would the criminals' motives change? What about the symbolic justice of the canonical stories - would it disappear? Transform? Etc., etc.

But no. It's all Wingardium Levibullshit instead.

Michael Crichton's Timeline (Book)

(Anonymous) 2014-11-01 08:13 pm (UTC)(link)
I've always liked Crichton's fiction novels, partly because they were exciting/kept my interest, and partly to look back at all the predictions he made about the future and laugh, but Timeline always felt like wasted potential. I mean, you have a company that built not only a quantum computer but a machine that can send people to an alternate universe that takes place at an early (and I think implied later as well) time than the present, effectively making it time travel, but no, 2/3rds of the book is set in 14th century France with the machine being busted. I guess it was interesting to see a more realistic depiction of medieval times, but the potential the machine had for stories was way more interesting than a few modern people on a rescue mission in 14th century France.

I forget the title, but it's a book about a demon lord who realizes one day that, you know, rebelling against God was kind of a stupid idea. He gathers up all his followers to march to the gates of heaven, where they'll repent and apologize for their actions. Problem is, the other demon lords don't want anyone repenting, so they muster their own armies to stop him. It sounds really cool, but I got bored with it pretty quickly.

Not something (though there's the whole of the series as well...) but someone: Downton Abbey's Thomas Barrow. He keeps getting tiny slivers of character development that all get retconned almost immediately. He is a character written completely incapable of change. And things that are important in his plot get brushed off in a less-than-five-minutes scene, while in the same episode, the topic of Lady Mary's new hairstyle needs about 15 minutes of screentime. It's frustrating, annoying and simply a waste of potential.

Star Trek: Enterprise. The idea of a prequel that explored the formation of the UFP was intriguing. What we got was awful, though.

I still maintain that the Terminus plot was wasted on The Walking Dead. Someone said that it was actually really in line with its counterpart in the comics, so I looked it up and have reached the conclusion that there were enough differences that while it might have been complete in the comics, it definitely wasn't on the show. Gareth could have been the perfect foil to Rick as far as as them both being leaders with really good intentions who did terrible things in the name of what they thought was right, but that never happened.

Monster High has the potential to be rather...interesting, but it's gotten bring.

Freaky Fusion wasn't bad, but, once again, it's a movie about either Frankie or Draculaua and they didn't explore the hybids much at all.

Don't get me fucking started on the Monster High anime. It's a fucking abomination.

Revolution. Don't get me wrong, I loved the TV show but I feel the writers took it in a very different direction from the beginning promos. So much potential and the second season focused more on romantic relationships that didn't need to be there in the first place and they killed off so many characters without showing their true potential.

Re: Wasted Potential

(Anonymous) 2014-11-01 08:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Fanfic I read recently. It looked like it was going to be really, really awesome, right up until I hit the last chapter and realized that we were, at most, about a third of the way through the story. As it turned out, the author felt the need to adhere to canon, which states clearly that the entire main cast dies at a certain point; the story ends there. It never cleaned up the love interest's messy relationship with their ex, or explained what was up with the supercomputer hooked into the core of the alien planet, or even dealt with the main character's sibling drama.

Re: Wasted Potential

(Anonymous) 2014-11-01 08:52 pm (UTC)(link)
As far as shows go, Heroes. I think the writer's strike did a lot of damage, but I also think they wrote themselves well over their heads, and were also too wont to cater to Sylar fangirls.

Characters... well, Tonks from Harry Potter is one. You have a character who can morph into different faces, and introduce her just as a war's broken out? Awesome! Except we... hardly ever see her do anything. Hell, they could've even had her impersonate Bellatrix in the last book when they broke into Gringotts. Why not? That would've even given her a reason to be at Hogwarts. Also, her relationship with Remus was awful, and I say this as someone who shipped Remus/Tonks VERY hardcore. Actually, maybe that's why it bothered me so much in DH.

Loveless. I thought the concept of word-spell battles was interesting if ill-defined, and the idea of pairs where the one conducting battle isn't one taking damage (as opposed to the one ordering/controlling the battle but not physically taking part) is something I've seen elsewhere but fascinated me in context.

It's a silly thing to still think about, since it's not like the concept is terribly different to something like Pokémon, but I've always thought Loveless could have been amazing if it wasn't made by someone who just wanted their boy love.

There was a fanfic I read once that was technically really good, and it had a plot that I was really interested in- (MCU) Steve was trapped in a groundhog's day loop- that's a good potential source of Steve H/C, right?

It ended up being mostly about Bruce.

...

It wasn't a bad fic, but it was genuinely a little disappointing to me, especially since the actual fic didn't match up to the potential in the summary IMO.

For Community, I was kind of bummed out that the character Rich Stephenson (the seemingly perfect Doctor who appeared in a few episodes in season 1 and 2 who unknowingly became Jeff's nemesis) didn't appear more often. I don't think he would have worked as a main character, but it would have been nice to see him every once in a while especially since "Asian Population Studies" ends with Jeff running to his house in the rain to beg him to teach him how to act like a good person...and then we never see Rich again. The whole thing Rich being implied to have some pretty serious issues (his brother died in an accident and his mother apparently blames him for it and thinks nothing he does is good enough, which is why he tries desperately to be perfect) despite his outwardly flawless appearance would have been nice to see more of too

So many TV shows start with an interesting premise in the first season and then proceed to piss away all the interest and potential in the second and beyond, I'm almost grateful* Firefly never had the chance to follow down that path.

The Hobbit. You've got pretty much the same group of people who made LOTR, you've got a pretty solid cast and beautiful sets. But wow have they made some really bad choices in terms of story-telling. I'm not even talking about fidelity to Tolkien. They changes they made just made the movies bad.

Also, I find that for TV there are several story ideas that come up again and again but because it's TV, they're always wasted. For instance, NCIS NO just had a plague storyline that was wrapped up in one episode and none of the main characters got sick. Or if there's an earthquake or other big natural disaster -- they're always wrapped up in one episode and the story is usually formulaic and doesn't take in account the interesting premise. Another example, CSI Miami had a hurricane but the episode was about a murder during the hurricane and not about the aftermath of the hurricane itself. Or they had a tsunami and there was a heist during it - they didn't show the heist or the tsunami. It's budgetary I'm sure but it's still wasted potential.

Sword Art Online

(Anonymous) 2014-11-01 10:45 pm (UTC)(link)
I can't remember the last time I felt like a series had such wasted potential. The concept was so cool to me, as a gamer and fantasy lover, and I even liked the art. And some of the little quirks and ideas were really fun. But wow, the story and direction. I got through the first arc (which is apparently only half a season despite feeling like the entire story) and a little bit of the second arc and realized it was just not going to happen. Especially the second arc, wtf.
