Things about books, movies, etc. you missed...

... that make at least a bit more sense now, whether because you heard the backstory, are old enough to get it, realize a change was made from the book if it's an adaptation, etc.

My own examples in a separate comment.

- Not having read the Wizard of Oz books, I had no idea Dorothy was supposed to be eight years old, and so when I saw the Wizard of Oz movie, I couldn't get behind a fifteen year old wearing pigtails and acting like, well, an eight year old child. I wasn't sure if she was just supposed to be very sheltered or if the movies just wrote her character like that without realizing how immature they were making her. Of course it turns out that they wanted the teenage Judy Garland to play her, and tried compensating for the obvious Dawson Casting.

I thought part of the casting rumors included Shirley Temple but back than actors worked for certain studios and they would have had to pay the studio to get Shirley Temple, if I remember correctly.

But the books are amazing and I love them!

This is so weird to me. Dorothy doesn't act like an eight year old in the movie (to me) at *all*. She acts like a fairly sheltered and naive young teen, not a pre-pubesent child. Considering she grew up in middle-of-fucking-nowhere Kansas during the Depression, that kind of innocence isn't exactly surprising (and she was also obviously sheltered by her family and the farm hands, so.....)

I dunno.

This. And that's not even taking into account the era the film was made in. If you compare her to the other heroines of her day, her character accomplished a lot.

I never got "eight year old" from her personality and hairstyle, just "sheltered country girl."

Years ago when I was but a teenager I played Final Fantasy 7. It never quite occurred to me the meaning of the camera panning up from that scene with Cloud and Tifa in the field below the airship towards the end of the game.

I played it again a few years ago and it finally hit me: He totally titfucked her with his hair.

Not what I was expecting. Thank you for that laughter.

Remember that if the camera panning up like that means surprise sechs, then it also panned up when cloud was squeezed into a hot tub with four big dudes.

I've never seen Grease, and ergo never heard the song "Let's Get Physical." So when in The Office, Michael and Holly parodied it with "Let's Get Ethical", I couldn't understand why everyone looked horrified. I wasn't listening to the lyrics.

... then they covered the song on Glee, and this time, I understood the lyrics.

"Let's Get Physical" is not in Grease. It's just sung by one of the actresses from Grease.

AYRT - Oh. Well, in any case, not knowing the song, I had no idea.
