Not in casual conversation (yet), but I sometimes forget what everyone in the anime/manga fandom calls spats are actually called compression shorts here.

Recently I've talked to a girl who's in the Sherlock fandom, casually ships Johnlock and frequents tumblr. It was weird.

I refer to pointless arguments as wank. It's such a perfect term to describe them.

I try to avoid wank, since there's been a couple people who thought I was talking about jacking off, and then even once I explained they still didn't get it.

I do use kerfluffle though.

Everyone should say kerfuffle.

I used wank and then spent a good bit of time trying to explain it to non-fandom friends which confused them more when they asked where I heard the term.

Quite regularly. Also the bf knows some fandom lingo, so sometimes people hear us conversing and they're like "WTH are you on about".

Mostly I just forget tings like that some of the real world is not always okay with talking about kinks, or two guys making out, or whatever.

Again, gotten some weird loos over discussing slash ships wth the bf.

Never accidentally. Sometimes I'll drop a term in to try to suss out if there are any other nerds around.

Most of the time people don't get it. Sometimes I uncover a kindred spirit.

Recently someone I know misused 'slash fic' - he meant crossover fic, and was making a joke based on something stupid we were talking about. It took a lot of self restraint not to point out his mistake, and to clarify the definitions of both fandom terms in detail.

otp. made weirder by the fact english isn't my mother tongue or the mother tongue of any of the people involved in the conversation. a conversation about tennis players.

I said "rule 63" in front of my parents and they had no idea what it meant so I explained it. they looked at me like I was from Mars.

Not with the person I was talking with. We were talking about fandom terminology, and the guys in the break room were pretty lost, which I found amusing. It was nice to whip out the jargon that wasn't arts-related, though.
