I refer to pointless arguments as wank. It's such a perfect term to describe them.

I try to avoid wank, since there's been a couple people who thought I was talking about jacking off, and then even once I explained they still didn't get it.

I do use kerfluffle though.

I used wank and then spent a good bit of time trying to explain it to non-fandom friends which confused them more when they asked where I heard the term.
