Re: Representation of Black People in Hollywood Films
(Anonymous) 2014-11-02 10:02 pm (UTC)(link)That said, even if % of actors being cast in roles roughly mirrors population percentage, that does not mean that there are no problems with representation - representation is also a problem of what kind of roles people get to play, who is being cast in lead roles, etc. I mean, I don't think it would be all that good for representation if there was a black guy in every movie but he was always the sidekick or the first person to die.

I have no numbers, but I have a feeling that if you named Hollywood features with a black protagonist and a white sidekick, the percentage would be far lower.
That being said, it really sucks this woman was playing oppression Olympics with an Arab woman of all people.
Re: Representation of Black People in Hollywood Films
That being said, people who tell you they "have it worse" and that hence you aren't allowed to have an opinion are either shitty or stupid, whatever their skin colour.
Re: Representation of Black People in Hollywood Films
(Anonymous) 2014-11-02 10:19 pm (UTC)(link)I'll admit though that I might have gotten a bit annoyed. I ended up telling her that even if she thinks that's the case, the issue of representing white women/black men couples on TV, for example, is still far more controversial than the reverse even though they're far more common in real life. And it just devolved from there….
But…yeah…you're right that it is a bit simplistic to go by pure numbers. So it probably isn't a very fair point to bring that up.
