Because long hiatuses for popular media always results in big fandoms. Knowing that new material is coming out keeps people from jumping ship, while still giving them time to produce fanworks. Other notable examples are Harry Potter (in general) and Teen Wolf (which experienced a huge boom in fanworks between season 2 and 3).
