These are usually people who believe that they should be able to drive drunk, park wherever they please without paying, and who have probably gained an ASBO or two. Any attempt to stop them from being general nuisances is police oppression.

I don't know. I would consider myself a pretty law-abiding citizen, but I must say I am not too fond. I don't hate hate them, but I certainly do not see them as my friend. Living and growing up in a high immigration area (we don't really have ghetto's same as the USA, but still) I mostly came to see cops as people who will fine you if you park wrong, but who won't help you if you actually need it (like, when they broke into our car, the police couldn't even be bothered to actually come check it out). Also when my mom wen to get a new ID, we had a cop checking "if she really lives at this address" three times over.

So yeah, I definitely do not see cops as "on my side" even if doing nothing wrong.

...ah, you're British. No wonder. Here in the U.S., hating cops is more about not liking an armed gang that will steal your money and property just because they can, or kill you for no reason.
