It's been a while since I read the books, but I think she whined about how cold she was and how she could never really love anyone before the worst of the trauma. (Never mind that she risked almost certain death out of love for her sister!)

But she kind of grew up in trauma, nearly starved to death after her father died, and has seen a lot of illness/starvation/injuries because of the mines.

I don't remember her 'whining' about love, just that she felt more brotherly toward Gale than romantic, and she felt she owed Peeta for him giving her bread (and getting in trouble for it) and that weighed on her mind a lot, as she didn't like to owe anyone anything (and she didn't know how she could repay him for saving her life).

...what? You don't think that losing your father in a mine collapse, having your mother pretty much go catatonic and leave you and your sister to fend for yourselves before even being teenagers, and literally almost starving to death constitutes as a good enough reason to "whine"?

Never mind that she risked almost certain death out of love for her sister!

Well...yeah, a big part of her character in the beginning was that she was so fixated on protecting and providing for her sister (because no one else could do it when her mother was severely depressed and not contributing to the household) that she did so at the expense of developing relationships and becoming attached to other people. She wasn't really whining about not being able to connect to other people, she just seemed genuinely confused about it. She didn't even realize that Madge considered her a friend until she gave her the mockingjay pin. It wasn't really a case of "oh, the mary sue doesn't relaize how ~special~ she is and that everyone really loves her even though she's oblivious to it" so much that it was a case of someone who had genuinely good reasons for being very emotionally stunted and had a difficult time forming bonds with people outside of her family that weren't based on reciprocity.

I don't remember any of that, so I'll take your word for it.

That's a really, really huge thing that's mentioned multiple times in the series and is established very quickly.

if you can't remember the most basic information about the character, then you probably shouldn't be evaluating whether or not she's a mary sue

You mean my comparison to Bella Swan? She's not a Mary Sue, and neither is Katniss.

Edit for clarification: I think every Sue element in Twilight somehow connects to Edward--a Bella/Jacob romance would have no Sue at all. Katniss doesn't have an Edward, so comparing her to Bella doesn't automatically make her a Sue.

Uh, yeah, Bella is a Mary Sue. A badly written wishy - washy, set women back fifty years Mary Sue.

...that's such a huge part of the story and character that I have to wonder whether you're trolling.

I remember reading The Hunger Games and having no clue what the hell Katniss's backstory was. I had no understanding of why she acted the way she did. I never skip pages in a book, and the book is undamaged, so I presumably completely misunderstood something (which is nowhere near a first for me.)

Katniss' backstory is mentioned on page 25 (assuming page numbers are consistent between copies) if you want to check it out. It's right after she volunteers and Peeta's name is drawn, so it also contains the story of Peeta giving her the burnt bread when she was starving.
