What season is this/does this show up in the series? I've been thinking about watching Merlin...just saw the actress in Dancing off the Edge....

Does anybody have anything to say for it?

Merlin only really got going in the second series. The first isn't bad but a bit bland and kiddie.

Series two and three were my favourites. It was almost a sitcom in a castle, plus glowing eyes and everyone speaking Welsh when they did magic. And the amazing Anthony Head!

Of course, the second series was when Sir Leon arrived, and I'm a big fan, so I may be biased.

It got darker towards the end, which was okay, but not what I'm into.

Best episode ever: when the King fell in love with a troll.

"The first isn't bad but a bit bland and kiddie"

Oh, thank God I'm not the only one who thought that.

I think it was a common enough opinion.

Merlin never developed its full potential except for some astoundingly well crafted episodes in series two, but then it was a family show about really quite dark subject matters. It was a hard balance to put off, and even without being perfect, was interesting and great fun to watch.

This is from the Season 3 finale.

MERLIN IS AMAZING. Colin Morgan is phenomenal, he's just flawless at acting, every character I've seen him play is so convincing, I wouldn't realize he was the same actor if I didn't know his face/voice and see his name in the credits. Bradley James makes an oddly endearing Arthur, considering at times the characters an ass and a bully. Angel Coulby as Gwen is a great choice, her portrayal of Guinevere is the first portrayal that seems convincing in the Arthur/Guinevere/Lancelot triangle, she's very graceful and brings a nice balance to the character. Katie McGrath plays a great Morgana, her story is painful because you really get to love her in the first two seasons. I thought it was cheesy at first but I got hooked. (I actually kept watching for the first few episodes because I found Merlin to be so sassy for a character I normally think of as some stoic old guy handing out wisdom and coaching patience.)

As I'm sure has already been mentioned (by the time I post this) this particular episode shown in the screen cap (which also includes the rather throw-away reference to Gwen & Leon having grown up together) is S03E13 The Coming of Arthur.

I will always encourage people to watch Merlin. I watched on a whim and hadn't expected to get so invested... Just keep in mind that it's not without its' flaws. It can be cheesy (esp S1) and the writing/character development fluctuates quite a bit (and some of the things the characters do may drive you crazy). But I love the core actors to pieces and think they're brilliant. But even better (imho) is the fandom. Lots of great fic and a pretty active fandom in various places. People might say otherwise, but I'm always gonna say 'go for it'. :D

There are certainly a lot of Merlin fics. One for every taste.

AYRT

To everybody who responded: Thanks! I'll definitely check it out--I like the fics of every flavor, and this Gwen/Leon pairing is intriguing and I haven't even watched it yet!
