OP, I feel like the difference in your two stories is the "haven't seen him in years part." If he'd been a constant and continual influence and presence in your life, murdering people and joining a Nazi organization might just have been up your alley.

Which doesn't excuse Ward at all, because having reasons for being evil doesn't change someone being evil. I'm just saying, given his backstory, I wouldn't have expected anything different.

Yeah, no. Even as a mentally unstable 16-year-old I had a pretty good notion that nazi = bad, and killing people isn't too great either.
