Except ward and Garrett were using hydra for their own goals, they didn't genuinely support them.

Yeah, that's right. They thought the Nazis weren't hardcore enough for them, that they were holding back and being pussies. Hey, when your excuse is "but they wanted to be worse than Nazis", then your argument needs work.

When you say "defend Ward's actions" do you mean they defend it as not being truly evil or somehow excused by his pass? Or do you mean defend as in consistent with his characterization?

Because while I agree the former is annoying, the latter group isn't particularly bad in my opinion and it's something I've done in the past.

To give an example, I'll frequently "defend" Anakin Skywalker's actions as being completely wrong and/or evil but understandable given his previous characterization and his backstory. So while I'll defend why I can see him making the choices he makes I don't think that excuses how terrible and evil they are. Just that they make sense from a characterization standpoint.

The human mind is not an input-trauma/receive-disorder vending machine, despite how fans -- and people in general! -- like to talk about it. It's a lot more complicated than that.

Ugh, I agree. Ward apologists are at this point more annoying that Loki apologists to me. And at least Loki was a fun villain.

Nothing wrong with liking a villain, but don't pretend he's some poor misunderstood soul.

About Hydra being Nazi

(Anonymous) 2014-11-07 12:46 am (UTC)(link)
Are they really? At least, anymore?

Because…it seems like they're pretty diverse now. I noticed this because after reading that post by the one Stony fan that everyone said was racist for talking about the possibility of Sam being Hydra, I noticed that one of the dudes that jumps Steve in the elevator is black and a few of them looked Latino. The majority were still white, but still.

So…are they just "sub-contractors" or "hired muscle" who don't exactly know who/what Hydra is or has Hydra basically abandoned any and all stakes it had in the racial purity aspect of the Nazis?

Hydra aren't nazis in the MCU

(Anonymous) 2014-11-07 12:52 am (UTC)(link)
Hydra in the MCU aren't Nazis, presumably because Marvel didn't want their red skull merchandise having a swastika when they made the cap movie.

HYDRA is a terrorist-military organization bent on world domination. It was founded shortly after the rise of Nazism in Germany by Johann Schmidt as the scientific branch of the Nazi Schutzstaffel. Its main purpose was to create advanced weaponry for the German armies, but over the years, members of HYDRA became loyal only to Schmidt himself. At the beginning of World War II, HYDRA still fought for the Nazi cause, but in 1943, Schmidt separated HYDRA from Nazi Germany to start his own conquest of the world.

There was a deleted scene in the first cap movie where hydra fired on German soldiers, and in the modern day we've seen them work with poc like Raina.

I feel the same re: Ward's past not being an excuse. People liking him isn't surprising (people have liked 'worse' characters, I'm sure), I just don't see why you wouldn't admit, "Yea, he's done some terrible shit and probably isn't someone you should instantly forgive or trust."

I don't want a redemption arc at all tbh (because so far I feel like Ward hasn't shown he's sorry for his actions, or understands why he was wrong), but if it happens, it happens. (We'll see if they do anything interesting with it.)

OP, I feel like the difference in your two stories is the "haven't seen him in years part." If he'd been a constant and continual influence and presence in your life, murdering people and joining a Nazi organization might just have been up your alley.

Which doesn't excuse Ward at all, because having reasons for being evil doesn't change someone being evil. I'm just saying, given his backstory, I wouldn't have expected anything different.

I've not seen much Ward defending but it doesn't surprise me that people do, I think a lot of it is to do with people not understanding that you can like a character without agreeing with their actions.
