Uhhhhh..... hands up if you're going to continue to write about the non-white characters you like and not worry about whether or not someone whines on tumblr about it?

Judging from the above comments you'd think we were staring down the barrel of a machine gun ready to charge, not risking some internet snark from people whose opinions we don't give a shit about.

I've also literally never seen anyone get on anyone's case about "writing POC wrong" in my fandoms. Ever. Not once. Are these yet more phantasms/rationalizations for not doing something they wouldn't be doing anyway? One wonders...

I write who and what I want to write, including minority characters. I have done since I started writing and I've never received any flack. Probably because I write my characters as well rounded as I can make them. But I have known plenty of writers (oddly mostly of the progressive or SJW mindset (their label not mine) who either tied themselves in anxious knots or just flat out wouldn't write any character they couldn't personally identify with.) Boggling, I know, but my experience all the same.

It's been a long time since I've posted fic, so I wonder if flaming is really that much worse than in fandom several years ago. There's always been vicious anon assholes, but it's only now that I'm hearing about people afraid to write characters or pairings because of it. I'm also a bit skeptical because gay men are a minority that SJWs can get very nasty about, too, if portrayed badly, and yet nobody seems to be nearly as nervous to tackle gay white men as characters of color.

Yeah the ~terrifying spectre~ of the tumblr SJW seems to be an excuse not to do/to do something that fandom tends not to do/to do anyway. What are they doing to do, anyway? Write bad things about your fic on their tumblr? Give you a bad review? Oh nooooooooooooooooooo better not writing anything then, because somebody might not like it. There's been a hell of a lot more/more vocal "bashing" (read: criticism) of people for "worshiping the white cock" and yet nobody's stopped slashing attractive white guys together out of sheer terror of tumblr anger.

See also: more than one person disagreeing with someone and casually joking around about it here on f!s being referred to as "dogpiling".

I saw a whole lot of it way back in the LJ metafandom days. And yes, dogpiling was when you got 100s of comments, not 2. I haven't migrated over to Tumblr, so can't say what it's like there, but back when the whole thing was brewing on metafandom, it got really heated in a lot of fandoms.

But I write at the speed of glaciers, so while I remember the drama, I haven't actually posted anything in the interim. So I can't say I've experienced it myself, or seen it since the decline of LJ, but I did see it happening back in LJ-days. Thinking specifically of SG1 fandom.
