Yeah, fandom is just as biased as the real world.

I usually notice it and don't let it bug me too much but recently in the htgawm fandom, the disparity between the fandom's love for Wes and Connor has ticked me off.

It's unfortunately true. Not even a conscious thing, just an unconscious bias people seem to have.

I'm not surprised, OP. I think it's more an unconscious racism ("I just can't relate to those characters because of... reasons") than malicious bigotry, but it's still sad. Most people don't like to admit to OR examine their unconscious biases, though.

We're all just racist fucks. No, really. Wait, wait. What's that? We're actually not. Here's the thing: You'll never really know why people in general aren't writing/drawing specific characters. Trying to figure out why is futile. Assuming the worst will only make you miserable (and make you look like an asshole).

So, be disappointed about what you're not finding and then either encourage the creation of it (and hope people oblige) or, and this one can admittedly be difficult and less fullfilling when you just want it to exist for you to enjoy, make it yourself and hope it will stoke interest.

I doubt this is the main issue, but do you think part of it might be that people get torn apart for drawing poc characters poorly? If I were a fan artist and I felt the least bit unsteady about my skills--or that my style would get me in trouble--you bet your butt I wouldn't post fanart of poc characters.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-08 12:11 am (UTC)(link)
I'll be honest, I think part of it might just be how, well, superficial fandom can be sometimes. I know I LOVE Sam Wilson in Captain America and have devoured all the fic I can find. But I have next to no interest in Rhodey by comparison. A big reason, I'm ashamed to admit, is that I find Anthony Mackie really hot but not so much Don Cheadle (not that he's ugly or anything but he doesn't push my buttons the way Mackie does).

That and I find Sam's relationship with Steve more…intimate, in many ways. Especially compared to Rhodey's more buddy-buddy relationship with Tony.

People are going to jump in with 'because people only like white cock', but there's another, more troubling, reason. People are afraid to write other ethnicities because there is the potential of 'getting it wrong' according to the internet. Now fair enough, no one wants to get dogpiled. But it's a damned if you write characters and don't get them perfect or damned if you don't because you don't try to write them at all.

This is a terrible state of affairs. Writers should be able to tell any story they want without fear of backlash from the checklist police.

I get you though, although I'm already used to it and don't hold preferences and tendencies against folk. I also don't blame people who are worried about their contribution of fanwork being "wrong" or offending someone, seeing how fans are so quick to provoke each other for things like a hue too light. Though I also feel they could do with nutting up because I'm an entitled jerk.

Uhhhhh..... hands up if you're going to continue to write about the non-white characters you like and not worry about whether or not someone whines on tumblr about it?

Judging from the above comments you'd think we were staring down the barrel of a machine gun ready to charge, not risking some internet snark from people whose opinions we don't give a shit about.

I've also literally never seen anyone get on anyone's case about "writing POC wrong" in my fandoms. Ever. Not once. Are these yet more phantasms/rationalizations for not doing something they wouldn't be doing anyway? One wonders...

I honestly think it mostly comes down to what fandom as a whole finds attractive. Fandom, as someone mentioned above, loves white cock, and a lot of nonwhite characters get shafted because of it. It sucks, OP. It fucking sucks. IMO, The worst is when people, typically in more sj-oriented fandoms, get scared of being called racist for focusing on the white guys and make an token effort to fawn over a POC, but in a really shallow way ("omgggg x is perf"). None of the meta, the fic, the character analysis, just the most generic kind of "appreciation". Afterwards, they go straight back to the white guys, feeling good about themselves because wow look at how much they love that POC and the character gets left in the dust. :(

Could it be simple as the best and most interesting roles go to white actors/characters? For example, if you had a choice between Tony Stark and Rodney Rhodes, who do you think you would have most fun with? Another example, someone above mentioned how on How to get away with Murder, Connor gets more attention than Wes. But Wes is a wet blanket. Connor has more of a devil may care, smart alec, "Hi, I just met you. Wanna fuck?" rogue attitude. That is way more attractive in itself than Wes.

It's not even the most beautiful white actors/characters that often get the most fans. It's the most interesting. For example, take Thor, the original movie. One could argue that Liam Helmsworth is better looking than Tom Hiddleston. He's taller. More built. Not to mention, he fits in better with the "white beauty standard" of being blue eyed and blond. But Loki has larger fan base than Thor. Way bigger. Why? Because Loki is more interesting than Thor.

Same thing is happening on Gotham. Ben McKenzie as Gordon is clearly the best looking actor/character on the show. But Cobblepot is the fan favorite. The pale, weaselly, raccooned eyed, beaked nose Goth looking reject has a bigger fan base than the good looking hero of the series. Why? Cobblepot is way more interesting than Gordon.

What we need is more break out characters who just happen to be non-white. Then you will see the shift within fandom. But right now, that isn't happening.

I don't write about POC characters for the same reason I don't really write female characters: it hits too close to home. I'm in fandom for superheroes and supernatural creatures and romcoms and idealized lives where there might be angst but there are happy endings too--let me just enjoy my escape into fiction, all right?

I think it's quite simple, actually. A lot of writers and artists are white middle class girls/young women, and even if most of them would never admit it, they probably just aren't that attracted to black guys.

Hell, it's the same for me. I simply don't find black men attractive. Never have and probably never will. If that makes me racist, then so be it.

This is why I'm not interested in, let's say Steve/Sam, for example. Sam's a nice enough guy and everything, but I don't find him appealing on that level that I need for me to be interested in actually engaging in activities like art or fic. So Steve/Bucky it is.

There's three reasons for this:

(Anonymous) 2014-11-08 03:43 am (UTC)(link)
1. Fandom has a good bit of racism in it, unconscious or not. Fans are people, and some people are racist.

2. Fans are often unsure or uncomfortable with writing POC characters for fear of doing something wrong.

3. Official writers often write POC characters in more marginalized, passive, supporting roles than white characters. So the most complex, interesting, well-written, coherent, central characters in a show/movie are usually white. This is so common than even when POC characters ARE interesting/complex/well-written, fans' brains are hard-wired to expect POC characters to be boring and their expectations become a self-fulfilling prophecy. (Basically, the same phenomenon as female characters).

(Anonymous) 2014-11-08 03:48 am (UTC)(link)
i don't draw fanart of dark-skinned characters because i tried that before and always got shit about how they were either not dark enough and that's offensive, or too dark and THAT's offensive. So. Whites only.
