I think it's quite simple, actually. A lot of writers and artists are white middle class girls/young women, and even if most of them would never admit it, they probably just aren't that attracted to black guys.

Hell, it's the same for me. I simply don't find black men attractive. Never have and probably never will. If that makes me racist, then so be it.

This is why I'm not interested in, let's say Steve/Sam, for example. Sam's a nice enough guy and everything, but I don't find him appealing on that level that I need for me to be interested in actually engaging in activities like art or fic. So Steve/Bucky it is.

This kind of thinking is so weird to me. It's like, are you attracted to the person or the skin color? lol
What is it that makes black men all so similar to each other, that you'll never find any black man attractive? Your answer will probably be something really sad and racist

(Anonymous) 2014-11-08 03:37 am (UTC)(link)
nayrt, I definitely find some black men attractive, but my 'kryptonite' is very much a specific set of abs/cheekbones/eyes/hair combo that tends towards a lot of white and hispanic men. So if you do the math on my favourites, you'll see a lot more white/white-passings in my faves.

I suppose that's really sad and racist, according to you. Tell me about what you find attractive, and I'll find something wrong with you.

ayrt
Considering I was replying to the person who said that they "never found a black person attractive and probably never will" I'm not sure what point you're trying to make here. I don't have preference for white men, but I still find some of them attractive.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-08 04:25 am (UTC)(link)
ayrt, Fair enough, I admit my eyes boggle over sometimes when I'm skimming through these threads, and I missed that. I've just seen other people judging people for their preferences, and I did miss that part about never finding them attractive. Sorry, will try to slow down when reading.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-08 04:47 am (UTC)(link)
No worries, I do that too. I didn't mean to judge people for their preferences though

(Anonymous) 2014-11-08 03:54 am (UTC)(link)
the color of their junk and nipples. Can't get over it.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-08 04:39 am (UTC)(link)
lol

(Anonymous) 2014-11-08 01:12 am (UTC)(link)
even if most of them would never admit it, they probably just aren't that attracted to black guys.

I've always kind of suspected this to be the case - mainly because I don't see the same kind of avoidance with black women in het fandoms (look at Sleepy Hollow fandom). But there's just not very many (or any?) popular slash pairings with black men.

There's absolutely a lot of avoidance of black women in fandoms.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-08 05:06 am (UTC)(link)
Examples?

(Anonymous) 2014-11-08 05:50 am (UTC)(link)
And I guess I should specify, by examples, I mean examples where het fandom skipped over the obvious pairing with a black woman to make a less obvious pairing with a white woman more popular. Because I'm not thinking of any. Doesn't mean there isn't any of course - just that that hasn't been my experience. But I have seen that happen in slash fandoms.

i think there's a lot of that with the flash and barry/caitlin (snowbarry is the portmanteau, i believe), but i suspect it'll be nipped in the bud by the show itself.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-08 05:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, it's too early yet to say how this one will come out. Barry/Iris seems slightly more popular on AO3, but Barry/Caitlyn is more popular on ff.net. But there's not all that stories posted yet on either site.

This one's complicated, because of its association with Arrow fandom. Part of the issue with Iris is that she's dealing (unfairly IMO) with carryover from Arrow fandom's loathing of Laurel Lance (who is white). Iris was tagged as Flash's Laurel before the first episode had aired. She's the comics canon love interest (which did not work out well on Arrow), she's the only main character not in on the secret right now (something I hope the show rectifies very soon). And beyond that, there's the complication of the writers deciding to have had Iris's father take Barry in to raise after his mother died, so that he and Iris grew up together, and Iris treating him like her adorable nerd brother. On the other hand, Caitlyn has been tagged as the Felicity, the genius girl, the girl in on the secret, the girl on the "team". I'm not sure any of that would change if Iris was white.

The show's young though - we're only four episodes in. Hopefully the fandom will develop an identity of its own that isn't Arrow fandom 2.0.

DA

How can you avoid black women in Sleepy Hollow? Does it suddenly become Katrina & Co. ? [this is directed toward the fandom base, not explicitly you, anon]

I really do suppose it has to do with the circles/niches one tends towards...because I love all my Abbey fic. And Jenny fic.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-08 05:15 am (UTC)(link)
No, what I'm saying is that Sleepy Hollow fandom adores Abbie, and Ichabbie. But that's het. I suspect that if Abbie and Katrina were male, Ichabod/Katrina would be the more popular pairing. But that's just my theory.

Woman, are you BLIND?

I'm not really a Taye Diggs fan, but he looks good there.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-08 05:33 am (UTC)(link)
NAYRT but yeah. Taye Diggs isn't ugly, but I can think of several black actors I think are way hotter than him.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-08 12:28 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm pretty sure that smile should be registered as a fucking lethal weapon, but at least the victims die happy.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-08 03:17 am (UTC)(link)
Pretty much. I generally have to find at least one character really physically attractive before I can ship them in something, and I'm not attracted to Steve or Sam. Bucky, though? I'm all over that, so I write a lot of Bucky/other pairings. I'd be writing a lot of Melinda May/other if I was in Agents of SHIELD fandom, but unfortunately the show killed that urge. :/

(Anonymous) 2014-11-08 12:53 pm (UTC)(link)
yes, it does make you racist.

you can't possibly have viewed every black man in the world to universally decide they're "not your type," and if the only reason they are not your type is their race, that is indeed racism.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-08 04:52 pm (UTC)(link)
I know that out of the physical traits I'm attracted to hair is a huge thing for me. Thing is, most black guys tend to have tight shave/bald, so it automatically detracts their attractivity by a lot, for me.
On the other hand, almost any other nationality, they tend to have longer hair. Asians especially, longer haircuts tend to be in fashion with them.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-08 02:39 pm (UTC)(link)
You're projecting tbh. I'm not saying there aren't a ton of racist white girls but the majority of white girls are not only attracted to other white people.
