I honestly think it mostly comes down to what fandom as a whole finds attractive. Fandom, as someone mentioned above, loves white cock, and a lot of nonwhite characters get shafted because of it. It sucks, OP. It fucking sucks. IMO, The worst is when people, typically in more sj-oriented fandoms, get scared of being called racist for focusing on the white guys and make an token effort to fawn over a POC, but in a really shallow way ("omgggg x is perf"). None of the meta, the fic, the character analysis, just the most generic kind of "appreciation". Afterwards, they go straight back to the white guys, feeling good about themselves because wow look at how much they love that POC and the character gets left in the dust. :(

Yeah but it's always safe to say white male character X is a shallow, naracist, meany. Say that about a female or minority character and you become a racist or mysoginist. For many it's better to say nothing at all rather than risk getting harshed.

I'm... not sure what you're going for here?

(Anonymous) 2014-11-08 01:05 am (UTC)(link)
You're not going to get in depth character analysis about characters classified uncritiquable due to their gender or ethnicity. White men, on the other hand, are fair game and meta about their flaws and foibles are actively encouraged.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-08 01:18 am (UTC)(link)
You sound like you're grasping for straws for why most character focus is on white men. Do you know how much more hate female characters get than male characters? I find it's even worse for POC female characters sometimes. And yet, they're classified as "uncritiquable" LOL okay

(Anonymous) 2014-11-08 01:12 am (UTC)(link)
Yep. We're not allowed to be real people so minority characters get generic "perf flawless char" which doesn't always lend itself to juicy meta or fun fic potential. Which is a shame, because it ignores the nuanced minority characters we do have and also says "hey if you're a minority and you're not a perfect human being you're horrible". Which isn't a shit standard that hurts real minorities in real life all the time or anything.

Wow, you just described fandom in a nutshell

(Anonymous) 2014-11-08 12:59 am (UTC)(link)
Hang around long enough it's hard not to notice.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-08 01:24 am (UTC)(link)
ayrt

??

(Anonymous) 2014-11-08 02:21 am (UTC)(link)
Yep, they pretty much described 90% of the people I follow on tumblr.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-08 02:17 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah the token fangirling over poc/female characters makes me roll my eyes. At least it makes the tumblr sj people feel good about themselves.

the lipservice is both hilarious and embarrassing in its transparency, but i disagree with you that it's "the worst". i think it's preferable to unchecked hostility or complete erasure. not by a wide margin, but by a bit.

from experience, it can get quite nasty in the rare occasions when a dark skinned character is perceived as threatening a popular white/white pairing.

You're right, the hostility and aggressively racist stuff is definitely worse. I meant that I personally find the masturbatory "look how aware and hip and not racist I am love me" lipservice more aggravating than the erasure in a lot of cases, because people then think "oh this character totally gets love, yay equality!" and the end result is essentially the same: a great character is overlooked.

trust me, i feel you. i'm with you on that. but the thing about complete erasure that worries me is that it can sort of snowball outside the confines of the fandom of a particular source material.

like, i'm not fannish about the MCU, but i remember that for quite a while, i didn't even bat an eyelash when i saw fanart on my dash that featured the likes of coulson, loki and even movie-verse wolverine and spider-man in the avengers line-up and left out nick fury and black widow.

it actually took reading meta for me, a casual consumer, someone who had actually seen the movies and considers herself somewhat aware of SJ issues, to figure out what was wrong with this picture.

for the longest time, i thought the main character in teen wolf was stiles.

things like that.

You know what? This is a really good point. I've been seeing more of the shallow lipservice lately, so it's been grating on me, but at least it's representation on some level.

Yeah this happens with both women and POC. Every fifty or so posts for one fandom they'll throw a shallow bone to one of them by reblogging a few gifsets or pieces of fanart and pretend that totally counts as giving them fandom representation.

[personal profile] beverlykatz 2014-11-08 05:09 am (UTC)(link)
I've seen some really egregious examples where there's essentially ONE gifset that circulates fandom with the character, and everyone reblogs it when it comes around, tags it with things like "X is so perf idk why I don't blog about them more", and that's pretty much it. C'mon now. You know the reason. You know it, I know it, God knows it. Don't lie to yourself. :I

Also, icon love. :D
