You mention MCU, but it's such a good example of a franchise that DOES feature a few black characters that are totally shafted. Do people honestly think MCU Clint and Coulson are more 'fascinating' characters than say, Nick Fury or Sam Wilson? I don't buy it. The characters are there. They're just getting shafted in favor of blandy mc-oatmeal.

I'm starting to wonder if I've tapped into some alternate universe MCU fandom, because I see quite a bit of love for Sam Wilson. Not as much as for the leads, admittedly, but more than for most of the supporting castmembers of the other MCU films.

Fury, not so much, though he's the sort of character that frequently seems to get a startling lack of fanwork no matter who's playing the role - I can't actually think of a white counterpart off the top of my head who's prominently featured in fic in any of the fandoms I've been in, either.

Yeah, I've noticed that. I think it's the fact that he seems so all-knowing that he almost doesn't seem to have human needs like relationships. I have seen the occasional fanwork with him, but people shipping him is kinda rare.

It's a bit like imagining your teacher having a real life or something.

I think that with Fury, let's be honest, that he's rather old compared to most fandom favs, and also bald (which some people do like, granted, but in fandom it's something that works against you). SLJ is fun, but hardly cute...a thing that Sam Wilson totally is.

Nah, but they are more readily ship-able. Pre-Winter Soldier, there was a pretty big power differential between Fury and almost anyone else, and Sam doesn't have many pairing options if you're not a fan of Sam/Steve. Clint, though, has implied history with Natasha and banter with a few other characters, while Coulson is a main character in a show with about 30 episodes. There's more to work with now.

Coulson's popularity came from the first Avengers movie. Just sayin'

Clint/Coulson was already the second biggest ship in MCU fandom before Avengers came out. That pairing got popular from norsekink and inertia.

That must be the power of white and bland x2

*waves the Sam/Natasha flag*
