Could it be simple as the best and most interesting roles go to white actors/characters? For example, if you had a choice between Tony Stark and Rodney Rhodes, who do you think you would have most fun with? Another example, someone above mentioned how on How to get away with Murder, Connor gets more attention than Wes. But Wes is a wet blanket. Connor has more of a devil may care, smart alec, "Hi, I just met you. Wanna fuck?" rogue attitude. That is way more attractive in itself than Wes.

It's not even the most beautiful white actors/characters that often get the most fans. It's the most interesting. For example, take Thor, the original movie. One could argue that Liam Helmsworth is better looking than Tom Hiddleston. He's taller. More built. Not to mention, he fits in better with the "white beauty standard" of being blue eyed and blond. But Loki has larger fan base than Thor. Way bigger. Why? Because Loki is more interesting than Thor.

Same thing is happening on Gotham. Ben McKenzie as Gordon is clearly the best looking actor/character on the show. But Cobblepot is the fan favorite. The pale, weaselly, raccooned eyed, beaked nose Goth looking reject has a bigger fan base than the good looking hero of the series. Why? Cobblepot is way more interesting than Gordon.

What we need is more break out characters who just happen to be non-white. Then you will see the shift within fandom. But right now, that isn't happening.

I agree with what you're saying, but you do realize that fandom's obsession with white cock is kind of a thing (see Agent Coulson? from the Avengers and other bland white male characters with limited roles that fandom obsesses over)

(Anonymous) 2014-11-08 01:06 am (UTC)(link)
DA

That's not all that common though, is it? I mean, I know Clint/Coulson gets pulled out every time this discussion happens, but isn't a pairing like that (very little canon interaction) getting so popular somewhat unusual? *shrugs* I don't know, maybe it's not. I won't claim to have encyclopedic knowledge of all the popular pairings in all the fandoms. :)

(Anonymous) 2014-11-08 01:22 am (UTC)(link)
Arthur/Eames is another one that comes to mind

(Anonymous) 2014-11-08 01:26 am (UTC)(link)
I never did get around to watching Inception. Wasn't that as much about the actors playing the characters as the characters themselves?

(Anonymous) 2014-11-08 01:34 am (UTC)(link)
They both got (really) popular from that movie, so it really wasn't about the actors themselves.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-08 01:35 am (UTC)(link)
*at least in fandom, especially Tom Hardy

(Anonymous) 2014-11-08 02:19 am (UTC)(link)
Oh my god, this, the blandest most popular pairing of all time. You know it only gets shipped because of white cock.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-08 02:27 am (UTC)(link)
I think a lot of it comes from the "darling" thing and the fact that fandom has always been into the "opposites attract" trope. Arthur is kind of stuffy (well, that's how fandom portrays him usually anyway. He didn't seem nearly as uptight in the film as most fic portrays him as imo) and Eames seems has a bit of a devil may care attitude so I'm not really surprised that the pairing got a lot of attention. I'll admit that I didn't expect it to become as huge as it did though.

/cries bitter Cobb/Saito shipper tears

(Anonymous) 2014-11-08 02:39 am (UTC)(link)
Still a mega pairing where the two characters didn't even do much and only exchanged like two lines in canon. Power of the white cock tbh. (Clint/Coulson is another example. Literally had to get a fan to point out to when the two even actually had a scene together in canon.)

(Anonymous) 2014-11-08 02:46 am (UTC)(link)
Arthur/Eames is an interesting case. It seems to me that a new fandom, especially a movie fandom, is often like a supersaturated solution: ready to form crystals but not quite doing it yet. Drop in a single seed crystal and BANG, the structures snap into place moving outward from that point.

With Inception, I think there was a lot of inchoate enthusiasm about the film, and then a couple well-known fans did a couple popular fics that were Arthur/Eames, and BANG, the fandom crystallized. Had those fics been, say, Cobb/Eames, I think we'd have seen a million bloody coffeehouse AUs and everything else where Cobb and Eames slog their way through the same old tropes.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-08 03:36 am (UTC)(link)
That's purely hypothetical...
It's more likely that if either Arthur or Eames hadn't been white, the popularity of that pairing would have never taken off. Seriously, fangirls would just fawn over JGL and Tom Hardy in ways that only bland white actors could be fawned over.

AYRT

Well, of course it's only because they're white, that's a given. I'm saying WHICH pretty-white-boy ship becomes the fandom juggernaut seems to follow a pattern similar to a supersaturated solution. Sorry I wasn't clear.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-08 05:19 am (UTC)(link)
Ah, sorry

(Anonymous) 2014-11-08 02:41 am (UTC)(link)
Just for the record, it's James Rhodes and Chris Hemsworth.

Sorry, editor. I get this eye twitch. It's not personal.

You mention MCU, but it's such a good example of a franchise that DOES feature a few black characters that are totally shafted. Do people honestly think MCU Clint and Coulson are more 'fascinating' characters than say, Nick Fury or Sam Wilson? I don't buy it. The characters are there. They're just getting shafted in favor of blandy mc-oatmeal.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-08 04:47 am (UTC)(link)
I'm starting to wonder if I've tapped into some alternate universe MCU fandom, because I see quite a bit of love for Sam Wilson. Not as much as for the leads, admittedly, but more than for most of the supporting castmembers of the other MCU films.

Fury, not so much, though he's the sort of character that frequently seems to get a startling lack of fanwork no matter who's playing the role - I can't actually think of a white counterpart off the top of my head who's prominently featured in fic in any of the fandoms I've been in, either.

Yeah, I've noticed that. I think it's the fact that he seems so all-knowing that he almost doesn't seem to have human needs like relationships. I have seen the occasional fanwork with him, but people shipping him is kinda rare.

I think that with Fury, let's be honest, that he's rather old compared to most fandom favs, and also bald (which some people do like, granted, but in fandom it's something that works against you). SLJ is fun, but hardly cute...a thing that Sam Wilson totally is.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-08 05:00 am (UTC)(link)

Nah, but they are more readily ship-able. Pre-Winter Soldier, there was a pretty big power differential between Fury and almost anyone else, and Sam doesn't have many pairing options if you're not a fan of Sam/Steve. Clint, though, has implied history with Natasha and banter with a few other characters, while Coulson is a main character in a show with about 30 episodes. There's more to work with now.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-08 05:12 am (UTC)(link)
Coulson's popularity came from the first Avengers movie. Just sayin'

(Anonymous) 2014-11-08 07:35 am (UTC)(link)
Clint/Coulson was already the second biggest ship in MCU fandom before Avengers came out. That pairing got popular from norsekink and inertia.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-08 08:08 am (UTC)(link)
That must be the power of white and bland x2

(Anonymous) 2014-11-09 06:44 pm (UTC)(link)

*waves the Sam/Natasha flag*
