(Anonymous) 2014-11-08 05:31 am (UTC)(link)I think it's worth writing people of different nationalities/backgrounds as a way of stretching yourself. It felt so liberating when I wrote a black man as the narrator in one of my fanfic. He was one of the few original characters I wrote at the time, and I adored the way he came alive to me. I wanted to keep writing him forever.
It made me realize I needed to start branching out from fanfiction and into other sorts of writing. Eventually, I did.
There's something people haven't mentioned (or that I've missed) in this conversation, too. People are genetically predisposition, for the most part, to be attracted to those of their same race and of similar looks. We have such strong taboos against familiar "relations" because we are literally physically programmed to seek out people who look a lot like us and have similar facial features, or resemble our parents to some degree, etc. etc. It is dangerous to interbreed with family, though, so we've needed strong taboos. (And personally I'm against crossing them even in fiction, but I know mileage varies there. We definitely need the taboo in real life.)
For most of us, this genetic preference for race is overruled sometimes at least, by the hormones, the trigger of a certain look or smile, the very physical presence and/or looks/pheremones triggers, to find people attractive who aren't on that scale of "looks like me/my ancestors." It's definitely a good thing IMO, as I think the more we as humans get past this the better off we'll all be.
