Agreed.

I LOVE Shatner. However, I feel like the addition of him to the reboots is just indicative of the fact that the writers KNOW that the new films aren't strong enough to stand on their own and are leaning on the old beloved actors to bolster the franchise.

I'm incredibly pessimistic about the new films.

Shatner is an asshole. I met him at a Star Trek con and he was a jerk to the fans.

He is so full of himself too. I went to a con where he replaced Stewart as a guest. Every other guest answered questions from the audience. Shatner spent the whole time telling stupid stories about himself.

Also, he spent quite a bit of time bashing the reboot movies, so it is sort of ironic but not surprising that he'd be willing to act in one.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-08 09:21 pm (UTC)(link)
right? This was before the reboots, but someone asked him a question about the show and he said "the show's been over for more than 30 years" and then told us about his ear problems.

I've heard that whenever Deforest Kelley went to cons and shared a stage with Shatner, he would just talk himself the entire time and never let Kelley get a word in. As a McCoy fan, if I had been there I would have been pissed.

This.
I was thinking about that when I saw Orci kissing his ass over twitter. Pathetic.
When fans and professional critics and writers criticize his work Orci gets angry and passive aggressive but when it's someone he likes saying the same things he ignores it and kisses their arse instead. How old is that man? SMDH

Shatner is a ridiculous person who's adapted being a ridiculous person as his schtick and it's wearing a little thin for me. If they had something good for him to do in the movie, fair enough, but I am just kind of tired of Shatner appearing in things just to be Shatner and do the Shatner gimmick..

Honestly, I'm just waiting for the stories of him being a jerk to his coworkers to pop up. Those will be hysterical.

They need to bring George Takei in.

It's too bad we can't get Roddenberry back in, because without him, I don't think nu-Trek will ever live up to the benchmark TOS and early TNG set for behind-the-scenes dysfunction.

They could clone him. We have that technology now right? What's the point of living in 2014 if you can't clone someone?

(Anonymous) 2014-11-09 12:08 am (UTC)(link)
Ooh, tell me about early TNG behind-the-scenes dysfunction! I've never heard about it with TNG, but now I am insanely curious.

I'm sure there are plenty of places to find it that know more than I do, but basically, as I understand it, due in part to Gene being old and in poor health and also having struggled with substance abuse in his life, there was a ton of behind the scenes power struggles, and in particular Gene's lawyer essentially trying to take over the show and being a general piece of shit to everyone. Also Rick Berman being an ass, etc.

It's less entertaining than TOS behind the scenes shenanigans, but at least the show got through it.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-09 02:08 am (UTC)(link)
LOL @ Rick Berman being an ass. Quelle surprise.

Thanks for the mini-recap - I'll see if my Google skills can dredge up anything, but in my past experience, LJ communities were the best places to find the behind-the-scenes gossip. Fingers crossed!

Me too.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-08 09:21 pm (UTC)(link)
As long as they don't cast him as Kirk, I'm good. His version of Kirk is dead. I wouldn't mind him (and Takei) cameoing as other characters though.

It is damning for the NuTrek franchise though, that they know their version isn't good enough to bring in the base on its own. They need to bring in other actors from the franchise to prop them up.

When do we get Picard? Or Riker. Suprised they haven't tapped Dorn yet either.

Frakes in nu-Trek would be amazing. But if we're talking about getting actors in, I'd like to see Jeffrey Coombs or JG Hertzler in so they can continue their crushing domination of the Trek franchise as a whole.

AYRT

(Anonymous) 2014-11-08 09:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Does anyone have that "shut up and take my money" pic?

Coombs would be great, especially if he reprise Weyoun, who could totally still exist, as an earlier clone, in NuTrek.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-08 09:57 pm (UTC)(link)
What role is he even going to play in it? If he plays Kirk my eyes won't be able to roll hard enough.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-08 10:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Didn't he express annoyance and frustration about being left out of the previous ST reboots? Yeah, it seems like including him is something meant to appeal to fans who appreciate the old school Trek but I can't imagine it actually working out very well. Much like the reboots as a whole.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-08 11:27 pm (UTC)(link)
I feel like they are just putting him in to soothe Shatner's ego and thats a shitty excuse to put him in. Also I don't know how it will make sense seeing as how Kirk is dead in the timeline Spock Prime is from. I wish they had just included the scene they wrote for the first reboot movie, that would have made sense and was also really touching...maybe they can still make that work somehow.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-09 07:46 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't blame you OP.
here's hoping that they will do something original and new and that we see more character development but, deep down, I already know that the next movie will have more fanservice than the last one. Shatner or not Shatner.
