For God's sake, people, stop making me feel conflicted. The instance I decide that DW in general and the Twelve Who in particular are just a huge trainwreck, someone pops up and says that Twelve's actually alright. Then I decide tentatively to give it a go, only to stumble across someone who says that it's the worst thing to ever worst.

Though at this point I am leaning towards never giving it a try. The way I picture it, new Who is basically like a super expanded version of Sherlock with a bunch of stupid sci-fi tropes.

The lesson here is that Doctor Who fandom is and will always be totally and irreparably crazy.

That said, from what you've posted here, I can't imagine Doctor Who would hugely appeal to you. I think that description is pretty unfair to new Who (I despise Sherlock but enjoy a lot of new Who including Moffat stuff) but I don't think it's really up your alley.

trainwreck is being generous if we're talking about tonight in particular. it craps over a lot of old school who. and that is not a reference to missi. it defiles two other old who characters.

Two? I only picked up on one, and that one made me all kinds of upset even though I was warned about it.

Spoiler for Danny

(Anonymous) 2014-11-08 09:58 pm (UTC)(link)
they turned the other one into a pun. the morgue danny was in was the chaplet morgue. hartdoc had a companion called dodo chaplet. danny is as dead as a dodo. ha bloody ha.

and the blatant one was ultracreepy and defiled everything the character stood for in the show

OMG, I didn't get the dodo one. Thank you. (If I can even say thank you about such a thing, but you know what I mean.)

I'm still upset about the other one.

yeah if they wanted to bring him back for a proper goodbye there were much better ways. what they did was just, ugh. all sorts of offensive.

DA

Already warned for spoilers in the subject, but yeah, I'm asking for spoilers, so dear readers, proceed at own risk, etc.

Does this have anything to do with the GIFset going around Tumblr of the Victorian chick frenching Twelve, tagged "Doctor/Master" with allllllll kinds of hate?

The "reference to Dodo" thing is a bit of a stretch, IMO.

Nope. That was last episode.

What people are talking about is that Missy turned all dead people into cybermen. One of them in this episode was the Brigadier who saved Kate. I personally thought him saving Kate was a fitting tribute to the man, but it seems like others disagree.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-08 09:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Defiled? I thought it was a sweet tribute, at least in reference to the one character I noticed.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-08 09:47 pm (UTC)(link)
I really like Capaldi but I really didn't like tonight's episode.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-08 10:01 pm (UTC)(link)
Just ignore the fandom. Try it or don't that is up to you but ignore the fandom they are comicbook fans level nitpicky.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-08 10:13 pm (UTC)(link)
The way I picture it, new Who is basically like a super expanded version of Sherlock with a bunch of stupid sci-fi tropes.

And so it will be. Until the clearly bad writing stooooooooopppppppppps....

Just out of curiosity, have you watched classic Who at all?
dreemyweird: (austere)

[personal profile] dreemyweird 2014-11-08 10:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Nope! Almost all my life I've had a bit of an... issue with large franchises. I still do, as a matter of fact; though I am beginning to find my ways around it. But as a consequence, I haven't watched a single iconic Western show longer than 40 eps, the only exceptions being Agatha Christie's Poirot and the Granada Holmes.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-08 10:27 pm (UTC)(link)
That's interesting.

There's parts of that I think you would quite like. Probably Two, maybe Seven, and especially Four seem like they might appeal to you perhaps. Certainly more than new Who would.

I admit I was thinking of watching Old Who, too. I do suspect I would like it better. But it so happens that Capaldi is my main fandom's fancast of choice; and that many traits of the Capaldi!Doctor look like they could belong to our character (Dr. Joseph Bell, JFYI). So I have a sort of urge to watch this particular part.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-08 10:33 pm (UTC)(link)
As someone with some issues with longer shows I can say that Doctor Who isn't bad. Most episodes have the same setup: Doctor and companion go somewhere solve crisis there the end. As long as you stay out of fandom you can watch most episodes outside of their original context without missing much.
