I honestly don't get this. How can you support anything that sends death and rape threats to people?

Re: Is anyone here willing to admit

That's not a good argument because pretty much every cause has people who take it too far.

But the whole point of this cause is taking it too far. The point of Gamergate is to use threats to get rid of women they don't like.

Except it's not.

NAYRT. What IS it, then? Honestly curious.

But most causes don't have that as the primary face of the movement.

Honestly, with all the Brietbart and American Enterprise Institute involvement, I'm expecting it to be astroturfed into the next attempt to get young people to vote Republican. The question is whether that'd work. The gamergate people appear to hate uppity women enough that they'd vote against core beliefs to beat Hillary or whoever else goes up.

You mean like the kindly face of Andrea Dworkin was for feminism?

I see what you're attempting to do, and that you're full of shit.

Actually, saying "all sex is rape" isn't the same as threatening to rape people. Then again, I'm sure the existence of people like yourself is a big reason she was led to that sad conclusion.

not to play devil's advocate but it's happened to GGers too

Re: Is anyone here willing to admit

(Anonymous) 2014-11-08 10:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Yup. And that is wrong. But there is a difference between a few extremists reacting that way and an entire movement based around doing that. The extremists don't represent their whole group. Gamergate is about threatening women.

it's actually not wrong to wish a regressive troll would kill himself and stop shitting up society

Yes, it is wrong, you asshole. What the fuck is the matter with you?

I've seen just as many death threats toward GGers (including the GGers who, you know, tracked down Anita's Brazilian stalker and have gone out of their way to call out the death and rape threats). So don't pull this bullshit, please.

Don't pull the "but it's just a few extremists on our side!"

Admit that you have just as many fucked up people.

Some of the themes about integrity in journalism actually make sense. A lot of the people involved in it are rather horrible, and/or in it for very different reasons of "as has been seen. Then you got guys like Nick Denton at Gawker deliberately setting out to make things worse, and between the clusterfuck and legit scumbags, you just want fucking out, which is what happened in my case.

Did you actually leave that shit? I'm pleasantly surprised if it's really the case.

Is that the person who you were thinking of when you were saying there was someone here who supported it?

Because there's at least two, in that case.

I did. It was kinda bad when I got in, it got worse, I got the fuck out.

Ehh, when actually dealing with the corruption discussion, it'd probably be best to have some sort of moderated place to do it. These are pretty serious topics, and people get really defensive about a lot of them - without moderation (i.e. on a fully open platform like twitter), it's not like it's really possible to have a constructive discussion about it. Advertorial content on youtube comes to mind as a hot-button topic, so do the dodgy press practices of everyone's favourite non-indie AAA publishers.

I'm just grateful as fuck that I don't use review scores or letsplays directly to inform my purchasing decisions so all this at least doesn't personally affect me.
