(Seriously, the constant belittling is disgusting me and not exactly making me want to go with a lot of peoples' suggestions.)

Anyway, thank you, I will definitely take that under consideration. I under no circumstances want to risk blindness, infertility or any of the other horrible side effects of the actual virus that is actually on the rise.

And yet I'm taking the suggestions that come with general respect seriously. Parts of this thread have set me well on the way toward deciding to vaccinate for polio, measles, mumps, rubella, and whooping cough.

Another part of this thread is convincing me that many people who consider themselves pro-vaxxers are doing their cause a huge disservice with their presentation.

Thousands, even millions, of people are devastatingly ill or even die from preventable illnesses. The reasons for non-vaccination vary (the polio epidemic among children in the Middle East breaks my heart), but it's a shame no matter where you live.

You should know that getting vaccinated isn't just for your protection. It protects children too young to vaccinate. It protects people like your sister, who had reactions and could not be vaccinated. To this point in your life, you have benefited from other people's vaccinations. And that's a good thing! If you do not have adverse reactions, you have no reason not to do it. Talk to your doctor about what they deem necessary.

A little bit of laziness, I admit. I had the (HUGELY MISTAKEN) belief that the denizens of F!S, who I have seen viciously attack anyone who was anti-vaxx, would have the research to back themselves up. I thought that that way I could be lead to some interesting information without having to sift through too much myself. I was wrong.

There's a difference between "questioning everything" and a stubborn, bordering on paranoid rejection of facts and evidence.

You don't have to get yourself vaccinated against anything, but if you chose not to at least admit that the reasons for not have nothing whatsoever to do with legitimate worries about efficiacy or crazy propoganda.

If you don't want them because you're scared, then you don't want them because you're scared. You weigh up your risks based on your community, your age, your travel plans, your plans in general, and you make a decision you can live with. We can't do it for you.

But that's the thing, isn't it? This assumption that I'm rejecting facts. If people were linking me to actual studies, actually trying to inform me instead of saying "get your fucking shots, you asshole" and talking about facts without actually presenting a source, (and you know, generally being kind about it) there's a good chance that I would come to the conclusion to get all my shots on my own. But all I'm getting is a bunch of people acting like I've drowned a kitten in front of them and don't see why it's wrong.

...I'm really kind of aghast that you would consider declining vaccination because some people on FS have been rude.

Also, "ask your doctor" is good advice. Most of us aren't qualified enough to be able to tell you what to do when it comes to something like this (apart from being able to say "vaccination in general is a good idea, because there are very good reasons to do so, and the risk is low"), and while it's true that not every doctor is worth her/his degree, s/he's far more likely to be able to help you weigh the costs and benefits of individual vaccines than the majority of people here.
