Don't some manga artists draw porn for money?

A fair number -- I wouldn't say the majority, but it's not uncommon. A lot of artists these days get their start doing doujinshi, which they sell at the big festivals, and while doujinshi really do have a wide range of subject matter, there's definitely a fair amount of porn among them.

One of the more recent artists to go from smutty doujinshi to a mainstream series was Shun Saeki, who did some porn doujinshi under the name 'tosh' before teaming up with a writer and a cooking consultant to do Shokugeki no Souma, which has its fanservice shots but is more food porn than anything else.
