i think the author said before that he regretted azumanga getting an anime because it made it more popular resulting in a lot of porn of it, more specifically with chiyo (you know, the 10 year-old girl) and said he never wanted an anime for yotsuba in case the same thing happened.

i can't really remember where i heard that but it always stuck with me because i really wanted to see a yotsuba anime but it'll never happen because of the author's wishes.

Seriously, it is beautiful, and as the child of a single parent, I both identify with and admire immensely Koiwai's relationship with his daughter.

I suppose in the future Azuma could go off the rails and do a timeskip into harem manga or something creepy like the last act of Bunny Drop. But so far (well, last I heard) there is no sign of that.

This isn't even "Death of the Author" nonsense. It's recognizing that life has multiple aspects, and no artist deserves to be pigeonholed as "just" a children's storyteller, or a virtual sex worker, or what have you.

I love Azumanga Daioh! It really resonated with my own experience of high school in a funny, lighthearted way. I don't think less of the artist for drawing porn, unless it was porn of high school girls (?). I didn't think Azumanga was fetishizing at all. I mean, they're not porny adventures. They're mostly pretty G-rated high school friendship adventures (with some incompetent English teaching along the way). I thought it was cute and sympathetic and fun.

I don't know anything about K-ON, sorry! But I'm happy to see this secret even though I disagree with it, because I have a lot of love for this manga.

um, what the fuck? when i was in high school when i had some real shit happening to me, azumanga daoih was literally the only fucking light (and got me interested in manga) in my life. i didn't have any friends that i could hang out with on a regular basis. while reading azumanga daoih, this is how i imagined having friends and having a normal (japanese) high school experience.

it feels very realisitic to me and i always imagined if i'd be the same way in that type of setting, or rather, had my high school life been actually normal, i'd be happier and more like the girls in the manga (specifically osaka & yukari because goddammit yukari is my idol).

i'm sorry you can't separate the two. and who the fuck is hating on k-on!? usually people praise k-on! for the same the reasons people praise azumanga daoih.

and shitting on yosuba&! just makes you look worse, honestly. consider the fact that almost every artist/writer did some porn of some kind before you judge them.

I haven't read Yotsuba, but I fail to see how Azumanga isn't just as moe K-On.

The reason it gets a pass is because it's older and thus people watched it before they had formed opinions on the moe phenom. It's the same reason that Madoka Magica gets hated by magical girl fans just because it's seinen, when the same people praise shows like Princess Tutu as MOST FEMINIST ANIME EVER despite also being seinen.
