It's a fantasy world. The main character is a green chick. I'm pretty sure a black Fiyero would not make any difference whatsoever.

We live in the real world where representation does matter. Also in the book people do put down Fieyro for his looks, "I wouldn't want to have skin the colour of shit," one says.

In the musical he dates a blonde socialite for a while, black men usually aren't allowed to date white women still in movies unless it's a story about overcoming bigotry.

My bad, I never read the book. I meant my comment to say that I don't see a good reason *not* to have Fiyero played by a black man (or a man of any race, color, or creed so long as they can actually sing in a musical adaptation).

Oops, sorry.

I guess I've just gotten so used to people defending the white washing in The Last Airbender "it's not China it's fantasy world inspired by China, who says they HAVE to be Chinese", I misunderstood what you were trying o say.

Sorry again.

I misread that as "green chicken." I was like "whoa."

I would read/watch the hell out of this.

There is one weird Spanish "Return to Oz," tie-ih book that recycles old Disney designs and Bellina the Yellow Hen is instead a teal.

With Gonzo as Fiyero?

This would be cool

(Anonymous) 2014-11-09 09:43 pm (UTC)(link)
It'd be great to see a MOC play Fiyero. I'm pretty sure in the musical it actually says he's from ways away and it wouldn't have very much effect on the plot. (There'd also be the added connection of Elphaba and Fiyero suffering oppression because of their skin color)

There's plenty of talent actors who could pull it off, but unfortunately I feel like the higher ups wouldn't be willing to try it :(

I believe one of the first actors to take on Fiyero was in fact a black man. Then again Broadway tends to be better about colorblind casting than Hollywood.

Taye Diggs, pictured in the secret was te third actor to play the role on Broadway.

I thought Fiyero in the book had dark skin? Or maybe I've always headcanoned him as black, I dunno.

Yeah, pretty sure he did. There was the line about the blue diamond tattoos contrasting with his dark skin or something (don't have my copy with me atm).

Yeah, I remember that line for sure. I always had such a strong vision of what he looked like in my head (dark skin, reddish hair) that I knew it couldn't just be my imagination.

I thought the reason he wasn't black was specifically to play up some sort of generic Prince Charming angle. I think a race change from white actors could work, but only if other characters gets a race change too. If Fieyro was the only black guy, Fieyro/Elphaba would feel way too "let's bond over our non-white skin color."

IIRC, in the book, that IS part of the reason they bonded. (I need to re-read the Emerald City chapters.)

(Anonymous) 2014-11-10 02:13 am (UTC)(link)
Well, that's disappointing.

isn't Fiyero blue?

this musical has been around over ten years how have I never once heard that they made Fiyero white. isn't that the kind of thing people talk about these days?
*mind blown*
ETA I don't really follow musicals so the fact that they probably recast the role all the time didn't occur to me, but still his appearance is so crucial to how I imagine him in the book. it's weird.

People probably don't talk about it much because musical!Fiyero really is a completely different character than book!Fiyero. In the musical, he's a slacker playboy with a heart of gold.

I just hope any movie we get is animated, so that Idina Menzel and Kristin Chenowith can be Elphaba and Glinda, since they are obviously too old to play school girls. They can do whatever they want with Fiyero, though Taye Diggs might be awkward, since Idina and he separated.

I'm with you, OP. When I saw Wicked on Broadway, Fiyero was played by a black man, so I can't imagine him as otherwise now.

What the heck I'll de-anon since even the people who disagreed with me were civil, and not telling me to get back to Tumblr (which I don't even really use).

I've seen the touring version twice, both times the actor was white... but I have no idea who that Gaston looking fellow in the Facebook game is inspired by (and yeah I did beat the storymode on the Facebook game). I think that one bugged me more than anything cause it didn't seem to be based on any particular actor (and it's hideous!).
