NA

Who says they are encouraging it? They could just wait quietly, and once they get a review they like, they post the next chapter.

Unless OP makes a production out of it, the readers won't know if the wait was due to the OP writing the next chapter, or OP waiting for a review.

I've never seen an author quietly hold updates hostage. Maybe OP is one who does, but any other time I've seen someone refer to it, they're obnoxious about it and don't even seem to take the extra time while they're being obnoxious to spell check their update.

It still seems shitty to me even if OP doesn't make a production out of it, but I guess it's slightly less obnoxious if they don't and use the extra time to have their work betad.

DA

If the author doesn't mention they're doing it, how would you know?

"I've never seen an author quietly hold updates hostage"

There's an author in one of my fandoms that does that. They update frequently when they get many comments, but stop updating completely when they don't get as many.
Once people start complaining about the lack of updates and the number of comments increases, they update immediately and include an excuse for the lack of updates. Since this has happened about five or six time it's pretty obvious what they're doing.

I don't know why I find it so funny!

Not the same anon.

I've never seen an author quietly hold updates hostage.

That's because when an author quietly holds a fic hostage, YOU DON'T KNOW THEY'RE DOING IT.

Exactly. How could that be any more obvious?
