I think part of the reason it took off was just the sheer virality of it, and the fact that - at the beginning, at least - it seemed a bit different from the standard, and is actually a plot driven show without shoehorned romance or fanservice.
You're right that Isayama can't draw. Tbh, one of the massive flaws of the series is that Isayama doesn't have the experience to tell the story he's trying to tell. The pacing is a mess, and the plotting is all over the place. I can sort of see glimmers of the story he's trying to tell, but it's just bogged down in the mess.
On the other hand, I think Isayama is trying really hard. Just... not succeeding so much.

Also it's not nearly as grimdark as the beginning leads you to believe. Lately it's mainly wtf all over the place XD

though, when all is said and done, I'm enjoying it for some odd reason. I like Levi, too, which helps (lol me and like 90% of the fandom). But I can see why you wouldn't like it, and hey, no skin off my nose.

Unpopular opinion here: I don't think Isayama is a good artist. The proportions are wonky half the time and the art is rough.

That being said, most of the time, I kind of think the rough style... works for the story? Purely because the atmosphere of the story itself kind of suits. It'd distract me more in any other genre but it's not put me off of Attack on Titan for the most part.

Style and quality are different things.
I am totally fine with the style - like you say, the rough lines, the dark shadows, I'm okay with it and how he works it in the story.
But lack of proportions isn't a stylistic choice, here, it's just not knowing how to draw properly. He has actually improved a bit over time, and some of the action scenes are actually quite good - if not because of inspired art, because of content.
But no, he is not up there with 'good artists' in any way XD
