Unpopular opinion here: I don't think Isayama is a good artist. The proportions are wonky half the time and the art is rough.

That being said, most of the time, I kind of think the rough style... works for the story? Purely because the atmosphere of the story itself kind of suits. It'd distract me more in any other genre but it's not put me off of Attack on Titan for the most part.

Style and quality are different things.
I am totally fine with the style - like you say, the rough lines, the dark shadows, I'm okay with it and how he works it in the story.
But lack of proportions isn't a stylistic choice, here, it's just not knowing how to draw properly. He has actually improved a bit over time, and some of the action scenes are actually quite good - if not because of inspired art, because of content.
But no, he is not up there with 'good artists' in any way XD
