Never!

I think a lot of fanfic writers do this, OP, and most probably subconsciously.

Then I'm more self aware than some. :)

More egotistical, certainly.

I don't know if it's exactly withholding a chapter, but I do think positive reinforcement works. If someone left a gushy comment on my wip right now, I would probably feel more motivated to write it. But I'm not intentionally withholding the next chapter, and I will update eventually no matter if I never even get another kudos. But it's human nature to respond well to praise.

and what if they DON'T comment? Do you just drop the fic entirely?

I procrastinate and have to really push myself to work on it.

A lot of writers drop fics if they don't get satisfactory comments, it's just human nature.

Or they finish the fic but never post the ending. That's what I do if I don't get enough comments I like. Why keep posting if the fic is dropping into a black hole? That seems arrogant. I finish it for my own satisfaction, and leave the ending unposted.

Hm ... interesting perspective.

I've been posting fic for 12 years. The fandoms I was writing for a decade or more ago had readers that commented; the fandoms I write for now don't. I have no idea why it's changed, only that it has (although I'm more likely to get comments on the older pieces when people come across them, so I suspect it's more the fandom.)

IMO I don't feel it's "arrogant" to keep posting to crickets, but to me it would passive-aggressive to punish non-commenting readers by witholding the ending. (I'd just take the entire fic down before I did that, tbh.)
