the level of reader entitlement in this community never fails to make me laugh. stay douchey, fs.

op, you keep doing whatever you feel like doing. you don't owe anyone anything.

Entitled readers are assholes, yes. But so are manipulatively needy writers.

You don't need to be the former to have issues with the latter.

ayrt

"manipulatively needy" lol

you are not paying these writers anything for their work. they are volunteering their own time and energy. if they no longer want to do that because they don't feel like it's worth the effort any more, then they can stop whenever the hell they want. the fact that you perceive this as "needy" is hilarious to me. this entire comment suggests to me that you are exactly one of the entitled readers you mentioned.

I'm not a reader at all. I create fanworks but I don't seek them out.

And yes, I'm sorry to break it to you but expecting people to give a shit about things you're producing for an already entitled consumer base who only give a fuck about getting more speaks of a neediness issue that goes way beyond fandom.

Writers deciding not to write anymore =/= writers purposefully with-holding fic until they get whatever they deem an adequate amount of praise and attention they think they deserve.

The second example IS manipulative and needy.

You're not getting it.

Fanfic writers don't owe fanfic readers anything -- but the reverse is also true. And when, as a writer, you start thinking that you're owed praise, and you start using your work as a way to get people to give you praise, then yes, you are absolutely being manipulative, needy, and entitled.

+1. And the ones that demand the updates probably don't even comment or give thanks to the author.

Only entitled readers object to entitled writers?
