That's sort of shitty, OP.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-09 09:34 pm (UTC)(link)
I hope you realize that's a really shitty thing to do to your readers and stop being a dick about updates.

Meh, I won't deny I get encouraged to write if I get a review, but if I waited for reviews I liked I'd never get anything done.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-09 10:09 pm (UTC)(link)
If it's not fun for you, if you feel like you need more attention and aren't getting it and that makes it not worth it to you...well find out what works for you. If writing for comments works, then go for it. For some people, it does. For others, it doesn't.

I don't agree it's a bad thing to do. But you need to focus on what works for you in fandom and why. And ultimately if you wait too long to update fics you will lose readers, usually. So that can backfire.

I found I got more comments when I posted fairly regularly, on a schedule, and people knew I was going to be faithful about it. Something to consider if comments are very important to you!

eh, I can kind of understand. Negative/nonexistent feedback will often affect my desire to continue a story, even though I never set out with any kind of expectations. Just if after a while nobody responds, I assume nobody really cares if I continue or not, so if the muse dies I don't bother fighting to resurrect it.

Like another anon said, if you're not telling the readers so nobody knows why, it doesn't really count as soliciting asspats... definitely could be worse /shrug

(Anonymous) 2014-11-09 10:24 pm (UTC)(link)
And this is one of the reasons why I never read WIP and won't be changing my behavior in this regard ever.

I don't think it's 'dickish'. I think it's human nature. You've put a lot of work into writing a story, you give it to people for free... Why not wait until a couple of them have said 'Thank you' before you give them any more?

Apart from anything else -- as I know from experience -- it's embarrassing to keep grimly writing and posting chapters when nobody lets you know they give a toss!

Way back in the day when I was new and impressionable and slightly more insecure than I am now, I used to pull chapters off Fanfiction.net if they hadn't recieved reviews in what I deemed a timely manner and reposted them later on when I thought they'd be noticed more. It usually worked.

I've never done the withholding for reviews thing though, and would actively avoid any fics whose summary included any variant of "I'll only continue if this chapter gets X number of reviews!!!!" If you're not being that obvious, OP, and your readers aren't aware of your private blackmail then I don't see it as much of a problem.

These days I find myself more stressed out and pressured by GETTING reviews rather than a lack of them, go figure.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-09 11:54 pm (UTC)(link)
You are a really shitty person.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-09 11:56 pm (UTC)(link)
It's your works so feel free to distribute them how ever you want, just don't expect people to put up with your bullshit.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-10 12:01 am (UTC)(link)
I can kind of understand, as I get thirsty for attention too... which is why I never post WIPs. There's no point quietly holding a fic hostage while waiting for people to validate me in a way I approve of (all while reader interest likely wanes) when I could just post a oneshot and be done with it. A badly received oneshot is a far lesser blow to my ego than a badly received WIP.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-10 12:03 am (UTC)(link)
You're kind of a douche, OP.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-10 12:24 am (UTC)(link)

op, you keep doing whatever you feel like doing. you don't owe anyone anything.

So many shitty comments in this thread. Nobody is entitled to your hard work, OP. If they aren't giving back, then what's stopping you from doing whatever the hell you want instead of posting? As a fellow author who puts in a ton of time writing very long, complex pieces, I totally agree. If they don't have time to leave feedback, you don't have time to post the work (and possibly feel shitty about yourself for not getting any responses. Some authors feel that really intensely to the point where it triggers breakdowns and self-esteem issues).

I've outright had people demanding I update and then not bothering to thank me when I do, except constant updates and then take it for granted that I will post steadily even outside of WIPs.

Fandom as a whole really misuses the people who make fanwork. I've seen so many stories of artists dealing with people trying to become friends with them just to get free art, people outright demanding an artist draw them things even when the artist doesn't have requests open and so on.

Man, people in fandom can be suck utter dicks about creators wanting feedback. Especially on this site, every time a writer dares to say "y'know, I'm not going to keep posting if I feel like no one gives a shit" the response is always "HOW DARE YOU, YOU NEEDY, ENTITLED ASSHOLE, YOU MUST WRITE AND FINISH YOUR STORIES WAAHGARBLEGH!!!"

Fuck those people. There's nothing wrong with not posting your work if you don't want to, and if a good review is what makes you want to, then you are entitled to wait until you get that good review. Rock on!

I've never really understood this.

Don't get me wrong, I love comments and feedback as much as the next person so I'm not some "write for the sake of writing!" martyr, but if I'm writing a WIP then I update whenever the fic is ready, whether I've had two or two hundred comments in the meantime. It makes no sense to me to sit on it, especially when the best thing I've found for creating a buzz with your work is to post something regularly.

Can I also ask, if you're still around the thread OP, what you mean by "comment or two that I like." What does 'like' mean? Detailed critique, thorough feedback, or just something gushy and positive? Because I can fully understand people wanting to wait for some feedback on a fic decision or plot direction before moving ahead, but it sounds as though you've already done the work but you're just sitting on the update?

I don't do this intentionally, but I am more likely to be motivated to write/update if I get some really nice comments. Chances are I'd (probably) get around to it anyway, but it does kick my ass into gear.

I'm not going to tell you're terrible, OP (somewhat an overreaction, considering 'don't read WIPs' is a common enough precaution), but I get the sense that this is probably going to be terrible for your motivation in the long run.

Eventually you'll resent your readers for not being positive enough and lose your motivation as they don't realise this is a compliment slot machine.
