They're still tying their writing into some pretty arbitrary reward system.

Like the anon above says, once that's your frame of reference when it comes to your creative works then you're setting yourself up for unproductivity because if the reward you associate with your work doesn't come - and it's never guaranteed to - then eventually it's "why bother making the work at all?" you know?
