But the OP has already written the fic, ie they write for themselves. They only delay posting it.

How is that harmful for their self-esteem? The writing itself is not dependent on the praise they receive.

Because they've said themselves it affects their momentum and motivation. It's only a very tiny step from that to not writing the next thing because the previous thing didn't get the reaction you thought it should, etc.

They're still tying their writing into some pretty arbitrary reward system.

Like the anon above says, once that's your frame of reference when it comes to your creative works then you're setting yourself up for unproductivity because if the reward you associate with your work doesn't come - and it's never guaranteed to - then eventually it's "why bother making the work at all?" you know?
