Really? I vaguely remember being so young.

I'm sorry, OP. And I'm so guilty of this, too.

I feel this. I usually learn my lesson after getting burned by something, but not with WIPs. I just keep going back to them like this time something will turn out different. Wish I knew what it was about them that made me keep crawling back haha.

Haha, same. I mean, sometimes I'll be about to click on a fic, see 'WIP' and go, "NOPE", but more often than not I click anyway then become incredibly disappointed when it remains forever unfinished. I spent almost all Sunday reading a LOTR/Hobbit fic that I really hope gets completed at some point.

I usually get over it pretty quick, but there was one WIP that I got invested in... I checked back every few weeks to look for an update, but there never was one. Eventually, on a whim, I decided to look near the end of the comments to see if the author had put a status update there.

Not so much. Turned out she'd died.

Saddest WIP ever.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-11 01:43 pm (UTC)(link)
This sadly happened to one of my best fandom friends. We used to bounce ideas off one another while writing. Then she stopped replying to my emails and her family was gracious enough to contact me to tell she had died suddenly. I haven't been able to finish the WIP I was working on at the time with her help either.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-11 02:37 am (UTC)(link)
Then you probably wouldn't like me very much OP, seeing that I've abandoned two, possibly three pretty popular WIPs recently.

I should probably feel more guilty about it than I do.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-11 02:38 am (UTC)(link)
This is why I never post any work--I never get more than a review or two, so I lose motivation and usually don't post the end. I find unfinished WIPs annoying because I often don't realize what I'm getting into, so I try not to be That Guy.

I will dare a WIP if it's been updated in the last six months, but longer than that? I suspect the writer has lost steam on it.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-11 02:59 am (UTC)(link)
I get what you mean. There's one of two hands-down incredible fics that I've read that are also not completed, and likely never will, and it does make me pretty damn sad.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-11 03:09 am (UTC)(link)
*one or two

[personal profile] solticisekf 2014-11-11 03:42 am (UTC)(link)
Many years ago I actually preferred WIPs, because of all the possibilities.
Now I still don't mind wips. It's ongoing works with short chapters that get on my nerves. It's nice to see an update but not when the read is brief.

I hate it when I see a fic with a really interesting summary and it's ongoing, but it was just updated last week so I give it a shot and it's great...and also never updated again. The chance you take when you read a WIP but still sad.

On the other end of things, I remember once long ago when I was a starry-eyed little fanfic writer saying to myself "I won't ever leave my readers hanging, I'll finish every fic I start!" Ah ha ha. Oh to be so young and naive.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-11 07:42 am (UTC)(link)
I never leave my readers hanging, and I've been writing fic for 18 years now! The key is to not start posting until the fic is finished...

I've been stringing along some of my readers with updates on a popular fic approximately every 9 months. I honestly feel terrible, but life is just beating me down. :(

(Anonymous) 2014-11-11 04:47 am (UTC)(link)
Same.

I do feel bad about it, but when I've already said real life is stomping all over my writing time and still get readers' demands for updates like I'm somehow just hoarding the fic to personally piss them off and my entire existence should be devoted to providing them with fic when they ask for it... yeah, I admit, I feel less bad about it.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-11 04:09 am (UTC)(link)
Awwww sad puppy dog. :(

Yeah I won't touch WIPs anymore. Even if they do eventually finish, half the time it's been so long since the story started that I don't remember how it began. And sometimes an ending ends up being a letdown. Reading a story all at once doesn't give me time to build up expectations that end up being disappointed.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-11 04:28 am (UTC)(link)
Unfinished WIP's make me sad too. Which is why I don't read WIP's anymore. It's just heart breaking when a really promising fic never gets done, so I don't put myself through that anymore.

Haha yeah. I have a problem with opening the really long wips, thinking, "Oh, I see it's got 100k+ words. But surely by the time I reach the dead end I'll have an idea where it would have ended :D"

I think what really gets my fan tears running is when a story I'm following goes on an indefinite hiatus of wipness. I feel like it's my fault somehow. How could I have been better, writer? I just wanted things to work out between us!

Worse still, an announced one. Because that makes it real 8'(

If unfinished fanfics is the biggest pain in your life, you're really lucky and I kinda envy you.

First reaction:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NAcGUpQJsjQ

Second reaction: Weeeeeeeeeeeeell, I wouldn't go that far. I don't read WIPs unless they have at least 25k words or five chapters (or thereabouts, depending on how good the premise is) so that there is enough story worth reading even if it does tank.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-12 12:01 am (UTC)(link)
I get so annoyed when people rec WIPs and don't mention that its a WIP, I just blindly click on the link, get super invested and 10 chapters in realise there is no chapter 11 :/
