OP

Well yes, but the comics aren't the MCU. And so many of the fans claimed that comics canon= movie canon and were generally obnoxious to people who ship her with other characters besides Bucky.

That is so annoying! I can't stand the posts about how "Nat and Bucky are totally going to hook up in CA:3." Or "Look at how Natasha looked at him while they fought! It is because they know each other so well!"

And I just want to be like, No. MCU is different from comics. As far as we have been shown, Natasha was not in the KGB or anything. And she says how she knew the Winter Soldier. He shot her once on a mission. THAT IS THE EXTENT OF THEIR RELATIONSHIP!

He shot her once on a mission.

SO romantic, amirite? :P

Well, shooting someone you love for the sake of a mission CAN be romantic (for given values of 'romantic')(mostly the ones that also mean 'tragic' and/or 'sociopathic')(I'm thinking Ivan/Victoria from RED here), but not if it's the only interaction full stop, agreed.

To be fair, ships have been created for less. Fandom loves ships with a fucked-up foundation.

Was just gonna say, in fandom-speak trying to kill someone is as good as a marriage proposal.

Hey, I just shot you,
And my memory's hazy,
But your skills are awesome,
So call me, maybe!

XDD excellent.
nightscale: Starbolt (Marvel: Bucky)

I could see how they could work it into the movies if they wanted to do it, it'd have to be very different, but they could do it. But as it currently stands it doesn't seem like Bucky and Natasha share the same history in the MCU.

And it's not like this is the first thing they've changed for the movies, the films are very different from the comics.

Oh yes, this so much.

Re: OP

Actually, I watched CA2 yesterday and she said mentioned going from the KGB to SHIELD. Of course, given the given birth date she would have been seven when the KGB was dissolved and is a bit of a stretch. Your main point still stands though.

Re: OP

I'm choosing to believe that the birthdate Zola gave for her was a fake one. Zola only knew as much as was in the SHIELD files, after all, and I could see Fury arranging a new identity complete with a new birthdate for Natasha when she changed sides.

As far as we have been shown, Natasha was not in the KGB or anything.
She was, though. She says in CATWS that she thought she was going straight, but instead traded KGB for HYDRA. (Though I agree that Bucky and Natasha don't seem to have the shared comic-verse history in the MCU.)

And she says how she knew the Winter Soldier. He shot her once on a mission. THAT IS THE EXTENT OF THEIR RELATIONSHIP!

Well, that's the extent of their relationship according to Natasha. But she's not exactly an open book: she could be concealing stuff about her past for her own reasons. Or she could be misremembering herself, if the MCU decides to go with implanted memories in her backstory à la the comics.

I agree with you that the pairing isn't even close to canon in the current MCU films, and also that it's unlikely to become canonical in CA3. I don't think the writers have completely negated the possibility, though; there's just enough room for them to walk their decision back if they really wanted to.

Re: OP

I was really hoping for Bucky/Natasha in the MCU precisely because the comics aren't giving me what I want. (Effing memory loss, grr. Is it really too much to ask that superheroes be allowed some happiness in their lives?) I lovelovelove MCU Pepper/Tony, and I was hoping that Bucky/Natasha could be a similar bright spot for me in the films. Alas, no.

Silver lining, though: Sam and Natasha were pretty adorable with each other, so I still got an MCU Natasha ship out of the deal. :-)
