The Unicorn Chronicles by Bruce Coville. Book 1 came out in 1994, book 2 in 1999, book 3 in 2008, and book 4 in 2010. I had a friend in early 2000 who was desperately waiting for book 3. I never found out whether she read it when it came out.

I know, right? I haven't even picked up book 3!

I'm a bit worried about whether it'll live up to my expectations, to be honest. I learned that a major character goes evil who I would have expected to be the absolute last to become a bad guy.
